The rents dont want me to get a mantis because there afraid that it will cut somones finger off.... what can I say to make change their minds?

My dad looked them up online
he found an Anti-mantis site, i.e. they called the matises thub spliters, the .22 caliber force thing etc etc

Ask them if they were ever bit by their hamster?

Then tell them you are not going to be putting your hands in the tank AND only the big suckers are 22 caliber anyway :)

Maybe point out a bunch of the links regarding folks, eating them.

Sorry to sound like a dad, but I am ;>)

PS: It might be a good idea to have them surf this site, lurkers, etc.

my mom surfs this site once in a while.... My mom is the one who doesnt really want it and my dad is iffy, This is the point at whitch I need to presuade them.... I would like to study the behavior, but my mom just thinks I want somthing that attacks and kills things...

Have them pm me. I have a bit of credibility on this topic and most of the dire stories can be traced back to thinks I've written. There are many species that are not at all dangerous to tanks or people. Hopefully I can convince them of this.

the problem is I want the peacock, (to early to think of latin name) .... and I think they do pose a threat, I mean theres NO WAY that the thing is going to hurt anyone.... it will be covered, and who would just randomly put thier hand in there, Maybie ill put a little sign up.... I dunno... what other nice looking species would do good in a 20 gallon.... any that get around 4-5 inches??
