Help with a Chili Coral

Stumped

New member
I was given a piece of what is commonly referred to as chili coral (Nephthyigorgia). The base where it was attached was disintegrating and it actually completely let go of the rock. During this time however, it has put out polyps and the top 3/4 of it looks to be fine (but I still was expecting to lose it). Anyway it appears the coral has stopped disintegrating and its now unattached, but still putting out polyps.

Could anyone give me some suggestions on general care for an unattached piece like this? Also how can I attach it to something else now?

Keep it in an area of low flow to give it a chance to reattach to a rock. You could run some suture or thin fishing line through it and tie it to a rock but I find this somewhat risky and unnecessary. Just keep it in low flow surrounded by rubble for a while and feed it when the polyps are out. These are very hardy corals.

my chili coral polyps have not come out for the last few weeks. Don't know what happened, no major changes to tank params. I did turn down the flow. hopefully someone knows what to do?

If they haven't opened in a few weeks then something is wrong. Did you alter or change your feeding regime. By the way, what are you feeding it and how often. IME they need to be fed 8-10 times a day to survive longterm. Did it get stung by any other corals? This could keep it from extending it's polyps. Any other specific information regarding your tank and coral would help divines the problem better.

Good luck

I was only feeding it every other day with "Coral Frenzy" It was about the size of a large hand when plumped up. 2 small aptasia where touching it for a few days. I bought it on a impulse and it's my only non-photo in my soft reef tank
