help with aggression between angels

hi guys I have a 180g fowler with a blue face angel and a blue angel. They have been together n the tank for about a month and getting along great. They are both about 4inches in size. I put in my passer angel today that was in qt. He is about the same size as the other two angels. Once in the display, the blue face and blue are constantly chasing him around and beating on him. Is there anything I can do to decrease the agression? I don't want to loose the passed, he is beautiful. I've tried re-aquascaping, keeping the lights off and feeding a lot, but nothing helps. Should I pull out the blue face and blue angels for a certain amount of time then return them to the display one by one? Any advice would be great. Thanks

I agree, eggcrate is a great idea. Once the passer establishes a territory, he will have no problem showing who's boss. My passer is a huge bully, very aggressive, nearly killed a similar sized purple tang that has been boss of the tank for 2 years and overly aggressive as well. He definitely lives up to his name as the "king" of all angelfish. Goodluck, let us know how it turns out, also I'd love to see pics of your fish, there gorgeous fish.

thanks for the advice guys. I'll get some egg crate tomorow. Came home this evening and found a big gash on the side of my blue face. He is not showing signs of stress yet, should I take him out and treat him due to his open wound or wait it out?

I would take him out and put him in your qt and treat him. I have a passer and I went and bought a blueface and the passer killed the blueface, it would not let up on him. Good luck with your fish, here is a picture of mine.

Well, good news guys, I think...I was off yesterday and stayed in front of the tank all day (so relaxing) because all angels are getting along fine now. The blue face does have his battle scars, but no other signs of stress and all are eating like pigs.

Be carefull. All three of those can be very aggressive. That mixture could all of the sudden develop into a war without warning, even if they are gettin along now. I wouldn't keep those 3 fish together in a 180. Especially since they are about the same size.

LA,

Could you give a suggestion for what two or three angels might be a nice and compatible combination in a tank size of 210-300 gallons?

Please give us your fish list for your angel/reef, as well as the types of corals housed.

Right now, it's a moot point, as my 210 has one angel (an emperor) and is too heavily stocked to add more. None of my other tanks would be suitable for any but dwarf angels.

As you might recall from other e-mails, I've wanted to have some angels together for a while. However, at this time, I have too many fish I like to be able to thin the herd.

LisaD: For 3 large angels in a 210-300 reef my personal favorites would be chrysurus, regal and goldflake. Or a blueline instead of the chrysurus. Both on color and personality. I love emperors, but they can sometimes be a little aggressive towards other angels. Most aggressive I think are mac's and passers.

As far as Reef safe I have softies, SPS and clams. I don't have LPS for a reason. They have a big neon sign on them that say's "Snack" for large angels. Some angels may pick at SPS. I think they only eat clams if the clam is dying. I've never had an issue with healthy clams.

Blues, Queens and Passers are probably the most aggressive large angels. You have 2 of the 3 together, potentially explosive.
Try separating the passer with eggcrate for awhile. Then remove the eggcrate, but watch closely how he gets along. If there are issues, try eggcrates again. If it fails again, then consider removing the passer.

Came home from work today and found the passer lying flat on the sand bed. Looks like some scales are missing, probably a fight erupted between the passer and the blue angel. I think I'll stop buying Angels for some time, I'm tired of loosing nice/expensive fish. So, now it's just the blue and blue face in the tank. Anyone have any suggestions for tank mates for these two guys? I was thinking of a blue throat trigger, or even some yellow tangs or even a lion fish...what you guys think?

at this point i think any intro of any fish like tangs or especially other angels would be pretty risky if you want to add tangs or angels i would recommend removing both angels into seperate clear containers obviously that are suitable for your angels sizes for a few days or weeks to allow for new introduced fish to acclimate and find his territory in the tank i have used this methode before for tangs and usally works for me

Perhaps wait 1 or 2 wks for tempers to cool off first before introducing any fish. Try a non-angel first. And separate him with eggcrate for a week first.

I would try adding fish in three's. One fish in with those guys will have no chance but if you add 3 the aggression is thinned out. It sounds like you have a nice size qt so you are good there but I would try something like a yellow tang, hippo tang and a clown of some sort -maybe a tomato or maroon. I wouldn't add any real nasty fish like triggers or large wrasses until last or any fish added is doomed from the start. I know because my lunar just mangled an emperor twice his size.
