I have this slime green algea on the bottom of my tank. I think that I have been over dosing my iodine and think that that might be the problem. here is a pic. this site is great and thanks for everyones help.
How long has the tank been set up? Can you post some water parameters. The algae you're seeing is most likely diatoms, and could have more than one cause.
nitrates are below 5 and ph is about 8.2 alk is good, calcium is a little high. I don't know my iodine level but I think that it is high because i have been adding on teaspoon every 7 days like the bottle says ( it is kent marine iodine supplement).
Just My opinion,If you look closer at the sand you can see black. So I would say it's cyano, just a darker form.
IMO,I would increase water flow.To help with advection.
Iodine is a strong antioxident when OD'd can cause a filamentous alge bloom.Delbeek & Sprung recomend one drop/ 20 gal a week. And thats only if you have a lot of corals, red plants..ect..a full tank so to speak.
Iodine breaks down into Iodide and thats what is used for molting.Since you only have a couple of shrimp,IMO you don't need to dose any.Infact too much can force the shrimp to molt more often, causing stress. So they don't live as long.
Thank you very much I have not put any iodine in the tank for about 1.5 weeks and it is already starting to look a lot better. I also ran Kent marine reef carbon for about three days. Thanks again for everyone’s help.
isn't RC great!!
so many knowledgeable members here, it's been such a huge help since I found it 10 months ago.. even when i just skim and read, i pick so much up..
