As Im still in the planning stage I started looking at Lights and im thinking about going with just one 175 watt MD. So my Question is what Kinds of coral should I be looking at. Remember Im just starting out so it needs to be on the easier side of it.

what size tank, how much live rock, sand, bare bottom tank, what kind of flow(powerheads), what kind of skimmer, and what kind of corals do you like. There are some of us who can donate starter corals, i have kenya trees, pink star polyps, and pom pom xenia frag somewere floating around tank.

don't let all the questions detour you but they gotta know.

OK as far as the light "one 175watt MH" you can get away with probably a two foot long shallow "probably no more than 18"-20" deep" tank and do about anything. Coral placement in the tank will be key. Corals that depend more on lighting will be high in your rock work and the others medium to low. What light bulb you going with? That can get confusing :D color temp 10 - 20k? brand?

To the point! Perfect advice....

I run 400w MH on a 11 inch deep tank and my softies are very very happy. The more light the better-JMHO

So you can't have to much light.

Sorry for the lack of info. its a 25 gal 21long X 18wide X 16high with a 3 inch live sand bed. Ill have about 20# of live rock and my new BH-100ss skimmer that I won at the party. As far as flow I would like a med flow(what ever that would be) around 375-400 gph but I'm still not sure on that one. I like a lot of the LPS and Polyp's and some of the mushrooms.

well with those specs 175 watt bulb gives you 7 watts per gallon with that method you should be able to keep pretty much anything in that tank sounds like you got everything you need to get started.

Yeah anything will be fine. Make sure if it's SPS that you keep your water clean and calcium up. Difficult to do in a small tank.

you can debate it if you want. but I'm not a fan of the ol watts per gallon method. Lots of things that doesn't take into consideration. Bulb placement, coral placement, reflectors, how deep the tank is, bulb technology, reflector technology, and others if you think about it long enough. Tanks come in all different sizes

i agree, i heard that only applies to halides and pc but t5's rated different, not sure i agree with you bulbs reflectors and placement are what counts.

besides there is no such light in ocean that is 10k sunlight is only 7,600k or 6,700k not sure something like that.

the blue bulbs are 14k or 15k up to 20k being the most blue, not sure what is best to use though i'm trying to figure out myself what brand and color of de 150 watt hqi bulbs to go with next myself the current brand bulbs i got now that are 10k look to yellow i want a more white color bulb or even if it is slightly blue.

Well this is what I came up with .

the higher the K the bluer the light looks, lower K tend to be better for coral growth and more intense 20K is basically a very blue look to the take with less intensity than a 14K. The lower kelvins tend to have a higher "PAR" rating.

So Im think about a with a 14k. I heard hamiton and Pheonix are good ones. I dont know since this is the first MH Ive ever bought.

does Pheonix make single end bulbs yet?

I run Pheonix 14k bulbs currently on my 90 and love them. Lots of people supplement actinic florescent bulbs with their 10k metal halides.

If you want to go completely overboard, I'm selling my MH setup.

2 x 175 , dual PFO magnetic ballast, mogol sockets and ghetto reflector setup. 1 XM 10,000K lamp, 1 Iwasaki 15,000K lamp. (both about 8 or 9 months of use I believe). 150.00

I loved the color of the Hamilton 14K's, Phoenix is kind of washed out looking and now that I am doing XDE 10K I won't go back, the par and growth is amazing. I am getting about the same par out a a 150 watt XDE 10K (par 55)as I was out of a 250 watt DE Ushio 10K (par 65). The bulbs are par monsters. The 250 watt XDE puts out 95 par, all from Sanjays site elect. ballast, shielded fixture

hey jack were did you buy your bulbs at almost time for me to get 3 new bulbs and i would like to try some out i need 3 double end 150 watt
