Help with D3100

How much did you pay for the 55-200? I just got a deal on amazon for a 55-200 for $94. I also got a d3100 which should be arriving soon. Maybe you could get it from amazon if it's not too late.

$194, but mine is VR, is the one you're getting VR?

I just tried to enter it in but it's expired. Oh well. I should be getting mine tomorrow, I'll post up pics when I can. Have you been reading alot? I've been trying to look up any tips and info online.

Here are some shots with the new 55-200mm. Personally i don't see a difference between the 55-200mm and 18-55mm. I have to shoot it at a further distance away so the camera can focus rather than getting closer with the 18-55mm. If i stand too close, it will get extremely blurry and i can't fix it no matter what. Not sure if its a waste of money or not buying this lens.

Your new lens is a telephoto. think of binoculars. It will be good for wildlife. If tank photos are your goal, you want a macro lens. Think magnifying glass.

Gorgeous corals by the way!

I have the tamron 90mm and quite enjoy it. At under 1/2 the price of the nikor I feel it was a good buy.

The 18-55 and tamron can both focus about 11" from the camera, the 55-200 I think is closer to 3-4 feet.

Keep in mind that the tamron is a full frame lens, so effectively it is like having A 135mm focal length (1.5 factor)

+1 here

Also, if you are trying to compare them both at 55mm, yes the 18-55mm is going to be better because you can get closer, but if you back up those extra 6inches or foot, or whatever and crank that bad boy up to 200mm, or even 100mm you should be able to see the difference, and get a tad more detail than before.

Oh, and for those great coral pictures, unfortunately for the wallet, a TRUE macro is the only way to go.

The Nikkor 18-55 is what came with my package. It's a great all around-if you're like me you'll find you are shooting it a lot more than other lenses. A good all around workhorse with a bit wider angle which is nice. I have a Tamron 60 mm F/2 1:1 Macro and a Nikkor 55-200 both are OK, but I can use the other in a lot of situations. Wish I had a 90mm Tamron instead. Also wish I had a bigger telephoto. If you think macros are pricey look at the big teles (new car price).

^^ Yep! If you want high quality, High aperture telephoto with VR for Nikon, your in the 6-10 grand range. Which would be a bit silly on this camera body.

I never use the 18-55. Its not even in my camera bag. I have a nikkor 55-300 and a tamron 18-270mm.

I got my camera in! Here is a quick shot, unedited taken with a Nikon 85mm f/3.5 G. I didn't use a tripod so its not the best, but it looks decent. I'm also throwing in a couple random pics. I will post up some stuff up and link it soon.

Damn nice pics. I really should save up for the macro lens

I just bought a D3100 too. I got to play around with it the other day and got some ok pictures but nothing to brag about.
