Help with DIY stand

83070finished_stand.jpg

Here is a picture of the stand basically finished. I cut the sides so that they would be flush with the front. I then used the trim to cover the edges. I did the same thing on the doors. The trim is about 1/4" larger than the doors which hides all the edges.

I've never used T5 lighting but from what I've read should be OK for what you are wanting.

Maxius: Very nice work!

I'll take a few this weekend.

A canopy is next on the list. I've been looking a several designs but haven't decided on anything. I have all the light components and fans sitting in the basement waiting for a home. The lighting will consist of 2 250w MH and 2 40w Actinics with 2 4" fans.

That looks nice I wish I did the darker color of stain.
What are you going to run for color temp? I have 2 175 watt 10k and 2 40 watt Actinics but on the next time i need to replace the bulbs im going to go with the 14k, I run one of them and 2 30 watt Actinics on the 40 gallon and that looks nice. looking at the two side by side the 10k looks so yellow and tuning the 40 watts off dont do that much for the color change.

I'm going to run 2 250W 10K Ushios and a couple 40W actinics. I've run these in the past I actually liked the color. But I've never used any higher temp bulbs so I don't have reference to compare them to.

Looking at the color from a photo is not the same as in person, I didnt decide on the 14k till I seen it in the LFS. It does not look anything like the photos do that are on the net. Like its ben said b4 it what you like is what it comes down to. Keep up on hte good work :)

Very nice indeed. I've recently started making stands to sell to the LFS. Mine are mostly metal though. I'll put up some pics if people want to see them.

clkholy: The frame of the canopy was made from 2x2's. Again some overkill here. I made two rectangular frames with 10" uprights. The top of the canopy is 13" from the water. I used 1/4" oak ply for the skin. The top and back are open since I will be using a couple of pendants for the MH.

I'd like to see one that would be similar for a 120 ag

Finally got this thing inside. Installed the Reefkeeper and painted the back black but still have to finish up the plumbing. Major bummer however is that I found a 1 1/2" scratch on the front glass :( Anything I can do to get rid of it???

The is for a 75 gal. and is my first attempt at a stand. The design is exactly like several I have seen (thanks sambo and others!). My question is do I need a center support? I would rather not have one so I have better access underneath.

Here is a picture so far:

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

In the first picture of the stand how did you fasten the vertical 2x4s that the upper portion of the stand sit on. I am building one similar to you and was in question about that. My Stand will be 50 length, 20 wide and 30 tall. Please advise how I should fasten the vertical 2x4's. Thanks Nick

Nick - The verticals that support the top frame where screwed and glued to the vertical that runs the entire height of the stand.

Kinda of late in the game here, but here is my 101 1/2" stand without center braces.

Not a single bolt or screw in it. 1 1/2 gal extra strength wood glue, mortis tenden,86 oak dowel rods, bisket cutts. Finished in and out with oak. the large one weights about 400lbs. The smaller stand has lag bolts, screws and a center support.

scroll to bottom of of photo gallery. Anybody want detailed pics PM your email. Building a 180 gal stand now. Half way done.

Wow. Just trying to finish my stand for my 120 and I am having a rough time making it look decent. It is ok but both of you have built amazing works of art. I hope that my wife allows me to bring mine inside from the garage. :)
