I just set up my 29BC and its about 2 weeks old not going through the cycle and now the piece of LR I go to seed the tank must have had some green hair algea on it and now its all over how do I stop this?? Clean up crew??? I know the tank is too small for a yellow tang so thats not an option. Any sugestions are greatly appriciated.
Thank you, Rich-

Check your levels Do a water change
If its on only 1 peice of rock take it out and get off as much as you can if u let it dry it will come off easily

If you are just cycling the tank then turn the lights off for a couple days and it will die off. I would throw some clean up crew in there and they should take care of it no probem and make sure you keep the lights off for a couple days.

Yeah, definitely cut the lights for the rest of the cycle. But I would also give the rock a peroxide dosing using a dropper (there's instructions in the nano forum), assuming nothing's on it.

RO should help, though I use RO (from Whole Foods) and still battle hair algae. Next thing for me to try is GFO...

I'm fighting it in my 2 y/o BC29 right now as well. Water changes, scrubbing with a stiff bristle tooth brush, and hermits are finally turning the tide in my favor.

Anyone tried a sea hare? I heard those are good for hair algae

They are hit or miss !
Some eat it some don't,and really depends what kind of algae it is.

I was (still am a little) fighting HA for over a year.
I purchased a Sea Hare and it immediately started eating the stuff. I actually watched its body change colors while it was eating.2nd day it stopped eating, and within a few days it died. I purchased 2 more, both pretty much the same results.
Then I put on a GFO,bought a huge clean up crew, added socks to my returns(never had befire) and got a 4th Sea Hare. This guy was like a lawnmower, and within a couple of weeks,my tank looked pretty good.
That was around March of last year. No my HA has come back, and the same Sea Hare is in the tank, comes out every night after lights out,but I see no improvement in the HA.
Attached is a pic of what my tank used to look like:eek2:
I think I need another clean up crew as I'm pretty sure over time my Flamehawk kills some off along with natural life cycle.

Good luck

I would take it out and clean it off. Plus, your cycle needs to complete before you put any CUC in there.

But it is definitely feeding on something, so do the usual... Water Change, are you using RODI water? How long are you running your lights? How old are the bulbs?

Sometimes it's just a phase in a new tank. We had it in our 20 for about a month, I pulled it off the rocks as much as possible and it's gone now. Didn't do anything else.

Green hair algae is eating nitrates and phosphates originating from fish food, fish poop, and the water you use to make water changes and evaporation top off. A lot of people use this and other algaes to filter the water with minimal to no water changes or protein skimmers. For example I never do any water changes and my parameters are 0 nitrates and minimal phosphates. I have a large refugium in which I grow algaes. I have no protein skimmer.

Is the water you are using RODI? If so then frequent water changes will take care of the problem especially if you have a protein skimmer.

GHA also needs light, but if you turn off the lights you'll make conditions good for some other kind of algae or organism that doesn't need light.
Feed less food. I feed a lot of food but that's ok because of my large refugium with my large amount of algea.
Live with some algea. It's a natural filter.
Stuff will happen to your tank. Learn to love it and don't worry if something asthetically is happening you don't like. Be patient.

I have yet to have a chance to get a picture of it but this is a new set up with no live stock yet I do have the lights of now and we will see how that goes. I have also done a 10% water change. I would take a picture now but I moved all the rock and the tank is cloudy again :( once it clears I get a picture of it.
Also yes this is RO/DI, no protien skimmer that is arriving on Monday:)....looking into a phosban reactor as well. This tank will be SPS dominant so after LEDs the Calcium rector will follow (along with a huge marital fight:))
