Hello everyone,
im just glad to say that im finlly back with the mantis crowd. i had a peacock up until 8 or so months ago, he never recovered after a molt... anyways, i got a new tank its an eclipse II (2 gal) acrylic. and i decided to get a mantis. of course the lfs didnt know specificall what kind they had but its small. i decided to get it on impulse. the tank was set up from my already existing reef so sand and rock is all good as well as water. anyways, he seemed fine at the store but when acclimating, he never got off his back. he is breathing normal but just never seems to be able to get on his feet. sounds dumb but it looks like he's gravitationally challenged or something. he made it through the night so im hoping he's ok. i tried feeding him today but he never even lok for the food which i thought was weird. i tied some krill to a shell and sank it to him, no luck. i finally put it on him and he went at it. i think maybe he's blind. his eyes look clowdy upon very close inspection and he just doesnt "check things out" like my old one used to. any help would be greatly appreciated! here are some pics to help with identifacation and prognosis?

by the blue and red of his smashers i think he is a g. smithii.
when i got my smithii, he didnt eat for the first 2-3 days, he didnt venture out for 2 weeks.

ya i was looking at some pictures and that was one of the species i thought looked close. any idea of why he doesnt seem to know up from down though?

im looking really closely and something isnt right with his eyes. at the base of the stalks it looks kinda black, nd the back part of the eyes are kinda dull almost dead tissue-y looking. its kinda hard to describe but i didnt notice it till now. one eye looks worse than the other

ok, well theres some progress. i'm pretty sure i figured out wh species he is. according to Dr. Roys list he's a Gonodactylaceus falcatus. im about 95% sure about it. unfortunatley it says ththey are not especially hardy or interactive, neother of which i like. but as long as he survives this little funk he's in i dont mind.

anyone still not have a clue as to why the shrimp likes being on his back and cant see?

any clues to the odd behavior.
Wilbur is eating, although he has to literally run into the food. still lays on his back and sides a whole lot but his mouth parts are always active and the (swimmeretts?) seem to be moving regularly. there is definitely something wrong with at least one eye, seems to be decaying. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
