Help with new 125 gallon build

I would get the biggest sump you have room for. I have a 55 gal tank as sump on my system. You can buy glass baffles and glue them in yourself. I have 3 compartments in my sump... refugium, return pump and skimmer.

Whichever sump you get, make sure it will be very easy to take the protein skimmer in and out. Remember you need a few more inches of clearance than the height of the stand, depending on how it's built.

Hello Simon,
Yes i have seen your build thread and it is quite an impressive build. Can you give me a complete list of all the equipment you are using? Also what fish do you have?

Here is my list of equipment for my 125 gal tank starting from the sump to the canopy:

30g 12x16x36 sump with custom baffles to create a PS, fuge, and return sections. I could have used a longer (>36") sump given the space that I have in the sump.
BM Nac 7 protein skimmer
Blowhole 1450 return pump
GEO 612 calcium reactor with regulator and PinPoint PH controller
Two LF 550 reactors for GFO and AC
Aqua 27W UV light
14W PAR 30 LED light to grow cheato in fuge
9 gal covered plastic container for top off water
Aqua lifter pump for top off
Two MP 40WES for flow
Two Eshine CREE 48x3W lights
A autofeeder
Two 120mm PC fans on top of canopy for heat control
The whole system is controlled and monitored by a ReefKeeper Elite controller with 3 PC4 units

With this setup, the system can run on itself with no intervention for 5-7 days, or longer if I open the RO to continuously refill the 9 gal top off water container. I chose not to do that in case the shut off valve malfunctions while I am gone.

As far as fish, I have a 6"Royal Blue Tag, 1Yellow Tang, 3 Blue Chromis, 1 Flame Angel, 1 Cinamon Clown and 1 Magnificient Foxface. I could have add 1 or 2 more fish but the corals are doing so well that I don't want to add more bioload.

Simon,
This is awesome, thank you for the list. Are you happy with the protein Skimmer? How much clearance in my cabinet do I need to perform maintenance on it?

My electrician is coming over today to run a dedicated circuit for the system. I will also be leveling my cabinet and putting the tank on it. I will try to post pics later when i'm done.

I think the MB Nac 7 is rated for 150g and it is doing a great job for me. I don't have any algae problem in the tank and I replaced my GFO and AC monthly.

I built my stand extra tall (41") so I can see my fish and corals at eye level while standing. I have 32" clearance under the horizontal 2x6 which is plenty to remove my PS or any equipment easily.

Here are a couple pictures of my tank a few days ago

Simon, your tank is looking awesome! I'm finally done with my electrical setup and leveling of the stand. Pics to follow...

Recepticals added this is behind the wall where the tank will be:

This is how much I had to level the stand:

Tank now in place:

This should have been the first pic in my last post showing the other side of the wall, dont know why that happened...

Now its time to start assembling my equipment..
I think i will go with the BM Nac 7 protein skimmer. I have about 27.5" from the floor to the top opening of my door under the cabinet. Would that PS be ok under there?

Need help with Sump / fuge

Need help with Sump / fuge

Can someone tell me if the following tank would be good for a sump / fuge?

Found it on craigslist, it is a 45 gallon long 48 X 17 X 12.5

would the 12.5" height be a problem? I figured this would be a good height because I only have about 29" total height under my stand.

I will be attempting to build my own sump/fuge and currently researching on how to do this. Would anyone local to me be willing to help with this?

tassod,
are you sure the 12.5" is the height and not the width? if it is the height I think it may be too shallow as a sump especially the BM Nac 7 needs about 11" of water to be optimal.

Sounds a little wide, will it fit inside your stand well? I'd suggest getting a cone skimmer, the water level they function in is lower. So you could get something that functions best in maybe 8" of water and build that sump accordingly. Maybe someone can do the calculations if that's low enough for when the main pump is turned off?

The stand is 74" long and does not have a center brace so there shouldn't be a problem getting this in.

Would you be able to take it out with the tank sitting on top of the stand?

I believe so, it would come out same way i would put it in. What sump dimensions and size would you think would be optimal? My stand dimensions underneath the main display is 72 X 17 X 28

From the description on Craiglist, I am sure the height of the tank is 17" not 12.5". I think you are good to go if it can fit underneath your display tank and your protein skimmer can go in and out easily. Are you going to use a submersible pump as your return pump?
