Help with new 125 gallon build

Tassod,
When I started my tank, I soaked all the rocks in 3% H2O2 for 30 min before cycling. That really helped keep the green algae off as I have none in my tank for almost 10 months. Just a suggestion.

Can you explain exactly what you mean by 3% H2O2 ?

Sorry, I wasn't clear on that. Hydrogen peroxide that you can buy from CVS and Walgreens are available in 3% concentration. What I did was to make a 50:50 solution of 3% H2O2 with equal part of water and soaked the rocks in that solution.

Cool, I'm certainly not the expert so I will do this as well. Would my next step be to wash substrate, put it in the tank and start filling? Rocks only on 2nd day for curing.

You can still do the H2O2 step. Just put them back into the curing tub after a good freshwater rinse following the H2O2 soak. I only cured my rocks for 1-2 days and then put them into the tank for cycling.

Yes, sand substrate needs to be washed and then you can put them into the tank.

how big was your mix so you were able to adequately soak your rocks? How much Hydrogen peroxide did you have to use? Would have to buy several bottles i would imagine to make a couple of gallons of this.

I bought about 6-8 32oz bottles and made about 4 gals of the mixed solution. I soaked a few pieces of rocks at a time and just made sure all the rocks are submerged. I took the rocks out after 30 min and put new rocks in. You can use the same solution for all the rocks.

In doing some research on the Tropic of Eden Reeflakes which I purchased, many saying that there is no need to rinse it. People over at premium aquatics say the same, no need to rinse. Rinse or no rinse? If I do, what would be the best way to do it?

I did wash my Tropic of Eden Reeflakes but I found out the rinsed water was clear after just one rinse so I didn't wash it further. I guess it is up to you but I don't see any con with rinsing it once or twice.

Did you use RODI water to rinse it or tap?

I think i will just throw it in there, if you got clear water after 1 rinse that is pretty clean. Everyone swears by it that its very clean and no rinsing is needed.

Instructions actually say to lightly rinse once, so decided to go with that. Currently giving rocks 3% H2O2 bath and then placing them in the tank. Once all rocks are done, will add sand and start filling tank to begin cycle. Can I use the saltwater in my Brute container that the rocks have been curing in to fill the DT tank?

After the H2O2 soak, dip the rocks into the Brute container to rinse off as much of the H2O2 as you can and then put them into your tank. I would make fresh saltwater in the tank to begin cycling.

Finally filling tank!

Finally filling tank!

Well, day has come to finally fill the tank and start cycling! Its been a lot of hard work but i am enjoying it. I started filling the tank last night around 10pm and this is where its at right now.

Once its full i will start adding salt to proper salinity. I have a couple of temporary 150watt heaters in there also to bring up the temp. I'm going to have a 300 watt heater in my sump return to maintain temp, will that be enough?

Here is a pic of the refugium:

here is a pic of the skimmer compartment:

Question: Not familiar on how to use or how the skimmer works. Do i basically just plug it in or do I need to make some adjustments? I see on top a dial type setting. Also there is a tube just sticking out, where does that need to be?

Looking very good! Tasso. Yes, you have come a long way and it is good to see how things come together. Good job!

I only have a 200W heater in my sump and it has been enough for my tank as my room temp is kept around 74F.

If you are referring to the white tube coming out the bottom of the collection cup, it is a drain so you can drain the skimmate to a larger container instead of emptying out the cup every 1-2 days. There is a plug at the end of the tube which you have to remove to drain the skimmate.

Ok, running into a problem with installing the CREE LED lights with my canopy. I thought I could install some PVC tubing accross the lenght of the canopy just under the lid so I could use the hanging kits to suspend the lights but they end up touching the water and to close, at this point i'm out of ideas. Can anyone offer suggestions on how I can install these? Simon, since you have the same lights, wondering if you have any ideas...Here are some pics. The PVC tube going accross is what I installed and can be removed.

Here is a pic of the entire tank with canopy...another thought is to remove the hinges and lid of the canopy and install the lights somehow...

My next question is about cycling. Tank is running now and I need to bring up salinity a little more as I am at 1.021 but i have run out of salt so ordering that tomorrow. No reactors or skimmer is running, just the return. What do I need to do going forward to start cycling?

Tasso,
As far as hanging the lights, instead of hanging them from inside the canopy, you can hang them from top of the canopy similar to what I did in my post.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=20068908&postcount=108

You will drill four 1/2" holes for each light in the lid directly above the 4 hanging locations and use two wooded blocks to raise the light to a height that you like. The height can be adjusted by varying the height of the blocks. Make sure you cut a slot at the top so the wire won't slip off the block.

Once you put rocks in water, the cycle begins. The low salinity will be fine until you add more salt. Keep the temp at 78-80F and run your skimmer also.
