Help with new 125 gallon build

I just want to see if your flow thru the GFO reactor is similar to mine. If it is, it could be the difference between GFO that we use.

For some reason I can't see the video on my iPhone. I will have to wait till I get home later tonight to watch it on my desktop.

Your flow thru the GFO reactor is less than mine. Is that wide open? Can u take a picture of the top of your reactor with the lid off so I can see the connection.

Ok here are pictures:

This is another pic after i removed some of the water on top

After i closed it up, i opened the valve (full as its always been) and this is a short video of the flow from it:

On another note, I took tests tonight on my levels:

Alk 9.46 dkh
Calcium: 468
Magn: 1260 - Odd almost the same as before the dosing. Here is a pic of the bottles and levels as the dosing finished tonight:

As you can see, plenty of MAG was dosed but did not really see any impovement. Should i let it dose another full day?

I've turned off the Alk doser.

I think I know what your problem is. Let me ask you a question to confirm. In the first picture is the inflow water coming the left and the outflow going thru the 90 degree elbow in the middle and exit the front of the reactor between the two hanging bracket?

That's strange. You should see immediate rise of mag after your 750ml dose. You can dose another full day as high level of mag is quite safe for the tank. I had my mag as high as 1700 over many days in my 92g to fight off algae.

Yes this is correct

The connection that you have is reversed. The way you have set up with the water coming from the top further compresses the media forcing the water to exit the center pipe thru the bottom. This explained why you forced some of the GFO into the sump earlier.

The correct connection is water coming in from the top thru the center pipe to the bottom and then rises thru the media and exit the reactor at the top.

You need to switch the 90 degree elbow and connector to the left to pick up the incoming water.

Wow, i can't believe i had this reversed the whole time. Thank you Simon yet again! This should definitely help and make a difference with flow

I learned that from the same mistake a while back when I reconnected my reactor after refilling. A bunch of GFO were forced into the center pipe and clogging the flow. I wasn't using the sponge pad then.

The right connection should correct the flow thru the reactors.

Well, it sure did. The flow through this reactor now is more then double and I don't even have the valve half way open! I had my carbon also hooked up the same way. When i changed them, initially the media started to separate and on the GFO, half the stuff started flowing up and actually disconnected the center pipe from the top. Closed the valve and it started to come back down and detach itself. I re-attached the tube and its working fine now and getting tumbling. Same thing happened to the carbon. I had to diminish the flow from the carbon substantially in order not to get it to tumble per the instructions for that media.

Need to start controlling some algae in the thank, will probably get a lawnmower blenny this weekend. Also thinking of getting a piece of coral, although i dont know what at this point.

It is always a tough decision on which fish and coral to get. Just one thing about corals. If you get any coral that grows aggressively (eg green star polyps or mushrooms), don't put them on your main rockscape because they will spread and hard to get off the rock. Keep them on its own rock and separate from the other rocks.

Toad stool, frog spawn, and red bubble tip anemone are all good starter soft corals. For hard corals, monti cap or monti dig are also easy to grow.

How or what is the procedure to acclimate and add corals to your DT? What method do you use?

Some people may not agree with my procedure to acclimate corals. I only float the bags in the tank to acclimate for temperature and then put the coral in.

Well, i dont see anything wrong with that, and your tank certainly reflects that. For the lawnmore Blenny, would you give him the same methalyne blue dip?

My MG has come up to about 1350ppm. Alk is at 9.12 and CA is 571. Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate show zero and I just got my phospate meter from hannah, and also is showing 0. I even measured the phospate level in my RO/DI Brute container and its zero. So why do I have this?

Hmm... I was hoping soaking you rocks in H2O2 would have prevented this algae bloom. Are your rocks cemented together? If not, at this early stage, I would consider redipping the rocks again in H2O2 if it gets any worse. Your rocks must be very high in PO4 which is supporting the algae growth. The PO4 is not in the water column as they are consumed quickly by the algae and removed by the GFO. Continue to replace your GFO once a week for the next 4 weeks to remove as much PO4 as possible.
