Help with Pipefishs/Overflow

I have a 30 gallon cube that I have a pipefish and mandarin in. He's doing great and eating well, but about 2-3 times a week, I have to fish him out of the overflow. How is the best way to keep him out of there?

Can you get some sort of netting over or in front of it?

It's a CPR overflow, and It has that grating already. Seems to go up there only at night.

go to the home improvement store and look for some type of plastic gutter guard, typicaly used to keep leaves outa the gutter, but it's good to weave thru the fingers of the over flo to create a barrier to keep the critters out of the overflo

I'll try and get a picture as I think that's what I have. The overflow itself has no teeth, but there is a plastic screening that goes folds and goes into the overflow.

Do I just have a strange pipefish or do others have this problem too?
