Help with Protein Skimmer in Sump

Hey Guys,

I have been reading a lot in this forum for the last few months so thanks for being so helpful! I am new to the forum and as much as I search, I think my question is to personalised to my situation.

I am just about to go an purchase a skimmer for the tank I have just convereted from African Cichlids to marine. I am intending on fully stocking out the tank with corals, fish etc.

Size of the tank is 5x2x2ft and holds about 160gallons.

Sump for the tank is roughly 3x1.5x1.5ft although I havent measured it as it came with the tank.

Anyway my question is what is my best option for a skimmer? The issue I am having is that in the first section the water depth is 300mm (12 inches) and most skimmers that are in sump that I have seen need to be at a max depth of 240mm.

I was considering a hang on skimmer but I would much prefer all the filter bits and pieces be in the sump.

Is there a skimmer that can go in water this deep?

If not could I put something under the skimmer that is about 100mm high so it will sit above the water level or is this going to effect the skimmer?

I could change the baffle height but I really really dont want to take it apart :(

Thanks so much!

Yes you can build a stand to raise the level of the skimmer in the sump; that is what most of us do. The stand can be made of acrylic or if the feet on the skimmer allow egg crate (plastic light diffuser with square holes in it).
