My girlfriend wants a seahorse. I was thinking of buying a 12g nano cube for her birthday, to keep one in. I want her to learn to take care of it. She currently helps me with my 150g reef. She loves the, as she calls them "Sitting Fish", Gobies, blennies, etc. I think she would love this idea for her birthday on Jan 27.

Is this going to be enough room for a seahorse?
What brand should I buy?
Any upgrades for them I should do?
Could I keep 1 or 2 small fish with it?
Best place to purchase one?

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated...

Seahorses are tough to keep. They will require feeding 2x a day in gutloaded brine shrimp, some of them will take frozen foods like mysis. I would not try it imo.

You can however get her a 12g setup with a pair of clownfish and some soft corals with inverts. I'm sure she would love this, you can then prop corals from your tank to hers and it will be fun for both of you. Me and my gf currently do this with her 6g nano and my 37g mixed reef. Good luck!

I would do seahorse yet. even when they are cute, I beleive she will be happier with a couple of nice fishies, like percula clown and some corals or something nice. but with a lot of color. I haven't seen a girl that like a reef tank were the rock doen't have coralline algae and some nice coral. mushroom, zoas, maybe a small gorgonian, a sun coral. very basic but nice

check out seahorse.org for seahorse info. it really isnt recommended for less than 20 gal, nor for a beginner, but if youre dead set on it, i would do at least 20 gal. seahorses require at least 2 times their length in a tank. kudas are a good beginner seahorse. altho all seahorses require special feedings, with the right attitude, it could be done.

I think I will leave it up to her on what she wants in it. I just purchased a JBJ nano 12g delux for $130 new. So its on its way...

As someone who received a 12g aquapod about 3 months ago with seahorses, please listen to me and save yourself some trouble.

1. Nanos have heat problems. My lid is off constantly, and I leave the A/C on in the apartment. The tank still barely stays at 75 degrees. I will have to get a chiller before the summer.

2. Learn EVERYTHING you can about seahorses BEFORE you get them!!

3. seahorse.org - go

75 degrees is totaly fine.i have mine runnin sumtimes at 85.it has its hood still and i dont have a chiller.remember in the reefs theres days that hit 87 degrees.

just have NO powerheads in your display tank. also they prefer tall tanks, and will do well with chopped PE mysis

Who's talking about reef temps? Sounded like he was talking about the needs of seahorses (and yeah they need lower temps).
