Help with SPS color

I did a lot of thinking last night, and as much as it breaks my heart I am going to take everything out and restart. I talked to a guy in Lynchburg that works at Liberty last night and actually I got my birdsnest from him. I think he is going to take all my SPS corals and put them in his system. Which is a really nice set-up with great color and growth. In return when my tank is ready for SPS again I am going to get a frag of each of the corals that I give him if they survive. I need to go by and talk to my LFS and see if they will give me store credit for my fish, and BTA. I want to plan this out and do it right. Now my question to the people on this thread is should I keep this thread going with the rebuild or should I start a new thread under SPS on how to rebuild for a SPS dominate tank?

Its crazy that as bad as my corals look, even tho some have died Is till have growth on others

Heavy feeding has helped my color and getting my nitrates up to .50 from zero has increased growth...

I have ordered new rock and I am going to remove sandbed replace with 1" and I am going to replace rock once its cured. I want to make sure I understand why this is being suggested. If my system is low in nutrients how does removing the sandbed help? A big reason I am doing this is 1. Xenia 2. I don't like the look of the sandbed I have. But, it was suggested by a few people that this would help in getting SPS to thrive. Can some please explain?

Kissman, there are so many things needed for great growth and colors with sps's. Honestly for some (me including) it becomes a continual battle. Somethings work out great some will not. Starting over can be a good thing, but stressful none the less. I did the same and one of the things I did differently was the addition of real live rock (from the sea).

On the rock subject, I've heard just letting the rocks curing in salt water (same as you would keep your tank temp and water conds) with out lights. Water changes after a few weeks. BRS does a nice video on curing dry rock, my buddy just did it and it seems to help grow a bacterial film on the outer layer which helps fight the big algae bloom we are all familiar with. Regardless you will go there a algae bloom one way or another, hopefully it wont be to bad. I won't run any gfo on your new system! IMO I would run BB until you strip all the extra nutrients from the rocks, but that's me ;-). Also its going to take a few months for your system to mature enough for SPS like acros etc.. Again that's just my opinion.

I've watched your thread from the beginning and have a few questions hopefully i come across something you may want/need to change.

Do you run 2 parts?
Was there any corals that did well and had great color?
All the photos you showed us looked funny to me, what camera did you use?
Do you plan to use GFO (god I hope not)
What skimmer do you use?
Would you be apposed to running a bb system?
Do you plan to keep any softies?
What types of fish and food do you plan to use?
What type of nutrient export to you plan to use?
How long do you run your lights for?

Do you run 2 parts? yes i run the each on 2 BRS 1.1ml dosers.[/I]
Was there any corals that did well and had great color? No all colors faded
All the photos you showed us looked funny to me, what camera did you use? Olympus E500 DSLR some pics are with iPhone
Do you plan to use GFO (god I hope not)I don't want to have to run GFO
What skimmer do you use?Warner Marine MF 181 (Skimz 181)
Would you be apposed to running a bb system?I really don't like the look of BB.
Do you plan to keep any softies? I do like frogspawns and BTA
What types of fish and food do you plan to use?I use Frozen, pellet, and flake. I would like to keep the fish I have
What type of nutrient export to you plan to use? I hope to only need skimmer and water chnages
How long do you run your lights for? I have 2 bulbs that run 1 hour, 4 bulbs that run 6 hours and then 2 bulbs for 1 hour. I was running all 6 bulbs for 6 hours but was trying to run less while the corals were stressed

What do you run your alk and cal at?
What salt do you use?
Do you use a RO/DI unit / and when was the last time you changed all the filters?
Have you have your water tested?
City water or well water?

I guess I should have asked that differently. You should really be looking past color right now and focus on coral health/growth. Color is mostly related to nutrients and light tweaking among other things. In your case lets get them to thrive first regardless if they are dark in color.

All the photos you showed us looked funny to me, what camera did you use? Olympus E500 DSLR some pics are with iPhone
Don't know that camera but I do have a Iphone 5, photos with the iphone aren't to bad if you work on lighting and focusing. True posted with the iphone as you go with your new setup, maybe it will be better rendering.

Do you plan to use GFO (god I hope not)I don't want to have to run GFO
Shouldn't be a problem with out, i've had sps thriving in higher p04 much more so then a stripped p04 system as you can get with the GFO reactor (ask me how I know) IMO they are for larger system with a big fish load and heavy feedings.

What skimmer do you use?Warner Marine MF 181 (Skimz 181)
Sweet!
Do you run anything in our sump besides the skimmer, ie rock / sand?

Would you be apposed to running a bb system?I really don't like the look of BB.
I know what you mean but it would very different from what you did before and it might be something you may want to look into especially if you want to fine tune your nutrient level with out GFO. Worst case you can always add sand after the fact. I say ditch the sad:smokin:

Do you plan to keep any softies? I do like frog spawns and BTA
I know what you mean, I like the frog spawns myself. One thing I've noticed myself i've removing most of all the lps's along with the softies since most sps's i like love higher flow and light. Seem enviably that most of us go sps dominate for these reasons a side from chemical warfare.

What types of fish and food do you plan to use?I use Frozen, pellet, and flake. I would like to keep the fish I have

This is probably the trickiest thing we can add to our tanks. Whats frustrating is it takes longer for the sps to react to nutrient changes then it does algae or bacterial blooms. I look for coral color changes and or algae that are in the tank etc..

What type of nutrient export do you plan to use? I hope to only need skimmer and water changes
Sounds good, be carefully with just these in a sand system. Eventually the sand will get loaded, its enviable. If I were to use sand I would go with some fresh live rock and some sand critters along with some macro algae during the first few months. That should remove the nutrients down at a safe quick rate with out a ton of unwanted algae. Also FYI any dry right will have nutrients so these will result in some type of blooms one way or another.

I was running all 6 bulbs for 6 hours but was trying to run less while the corals were stressed.
I've never had much luck with T5's but some people swear by them. Love Led's these days, shame they are not cheap.

Alk has been running 8-8.3dkh was thinking of dropping it to 7.5dkh, calcium 480, Mag 1500, Salt I use Seachem Reef but going back to Red Sea next bucket, Yes I use a 4 stage RO/DI unit, I change filters when TDS reads 1ppm coming out, all filters changed a few months ago, RO membrane changed about 6 months ago. What tests are you referring to on water? It is city water

I agree with this 100%

Don't know that camera but I do have a Iphone 5, photos with the iphone aren't to bad if you work on lighting and focusing. True posted with the iphone as you go with your new setup, maybe it will be better rendering. The advantage of using a DSLR over a iPhone is I can shoot in RAW and adjust the white balance

I am running a 6" DSB in refugium along with a piece of rock, and some macro's. DSB will be removed. Once the new rock, and sand is in the tank I will be ordering a cleanup crew from www.reefcleaners.org

When i start cycling new rock hopefully this weekend is it better to add bacteria which i already had, add a cupful of existing sand from DT or should i add both to the container i am going to cycle rock in?
