Help With Stocking My Tank

Hi everyone. I'm new to reefing and have recently set up a 54 gallon corner tank with 2 ocellaris clowns, clean-up crew, about 50 lbs. of live rock, and various coral frags. Now, I'm clueless. I want a tank with lots of color, but haven't found any fish tht really catch my eye at my LFS. Any suggestions? My goal is to have a peaceful reef tank with no aggressive or coral-eating fish.

Also, I eventually want an anemone. What is the hardiest species? Most likey to play host to my clowns?

Any and all help is appreciated :)

Check out the fish selection at liveaquaria. They have a nice catalog of fish with some decent info about tank requirements, temperment, etc. IMO, it's a good souce to see photos of commonly available fish (and some not so common).

Your tank size will dramatically limit the fish from which you should choose.

What kind of lights are you using on this tank? Anemones need high intensity light to flourish. One of the hardier anemones is the Entacmaea quadricolor or bubble tip. The are not natural hosts to A. ocellaris but many of these clowns take up residence in them regardless.

Time to start reading and looking at online livestock stores and researching the fish. But here are your options....gobies, firefish, blennies, clowns, basslets, assessors, smaller hawkfish, dottybacks and fairy/flasher wrasses. Yes thats about it. No mandarins. Even ORAs lol. No angels as you want reef safe.

McCosker is fine, but Royal Grammas can show agression

No problem. I was going to get a chalk bass also but I read while I was in the store on my phone and changed my mind.

I've never heard that about chalk bass. What was it exactly that you read? I've been thinking of adding some.

Ive read they caused hell in the tank. But Ive also read them being docile. This is one of those occassions where I think its up to the individual fish

Thank you for the info. About how many fish can I keep including my two clowns?

Oh, and I have T5s (lighting)

I have a 40 breeder and have 5 +1 in QT. With proper filtration, I dont see a problem getting up to around 7-8 nano sized fish. But youll know when you are at your limit.

And T5s are good enough to keep an anemone. BTAs are the most popular. But dont get one til at least your tank is 6 months old. The more stable your tank. the better it will be for the anemone. No keep in mind, some anemones will eat fish and can sting you. So research well.
