--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I bought an old wet-dry sump and am attempting to reconfigure it for my 70 gal reef tank. Tank is a SeaClear 20 gal with odd dimensions. I can use any help you might offer.

Here is what I am thinking for my re-configured sump.
Comments please? I'm trying not to add too much complexity to the actual fab. New baffles are in red - there are only two plus whatever I need to do to get the filter sock in place. Should the sock be submerged or ???

Have I made it too complicated all the same? Would you add or delete something? Any advice appreciated.

I am just getting back in (so I am kind if the same process), but I think that I would move the skimmer first. Here are two other threads that you might read:

This is and advanced concept, but very clear and has some great points Duplex Sump Concept

This is a Do It Yourself thread that maybe more to your liking: Building a sump

Good Luck

I have been following to see what better qualified people would say. They didn't so I will just try and point you to what they said.

I'd keep the sponge and put the sock 3/4 in the water. My filter sock sometimes overflows which could cause a problem with spilling. I'd also put your return from the skimmer into the filter sock also. It'll help eliminate microbubbles. You should really put in baffles on the end area to get rid of all the microbubbles id still keep the sponge though

Sorry, This went dormant for a while. I appreciate all the help so far. Sponge is out - any other media for purely mechanical filtering you might recommend? I'm thinking basic bonded filter pad? I have also relocated the skimmer and removed the DSB in favor of a refugium. I upgraded the skimmer to a PM Bullet 2 and expect to add separate GFO and Carbon reactors from BRS as well. Heres the basic idea:

I have both 200 micron mesh and felt filter socks on order as well so that will provide basic mechanical filtration. Return pump is a little giant 4 series @ which will provide about 800 GPH at the display tank level. Please share your thoughts, Thanks!

Oh yea - one more thing - part of the concept is to minimize mods to the existing sump I bought - new work is shown in red, existing in black, which explains some of the bizarreness of the baffle scheme. I've already located a filter sock holder so that part is complete - I expect to set the new triple baffle in place next week and get this puppy set up!
