Help with test results

Hello. I finally got my tank up and running about 10 days ago. For about 2 weeks before it was going I had 125 pounds of Marco dry rock soaking in it (in saltwater) and 100 pounds of new live sand and was very lightly ghost feeding pellets. 10 days ago i topped it off, fired up pumps, added about 8 pounds of live rock, (one larger piece and 3 fist size pieces) and a couple pieces of shrimp, which seem to have disappeared. I have continued to ghost feed the pellets. I finally tested the water 2 days ago with my api saltwater test kit.
Salinity: 1.026 (act refractometer)
Ph: 8.0
Ammonia: >0.25
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
Temp: 77

I added a good sized pinch of pellets yesterday. I tested again today and got the same results.
I am assuming I should just continue doing what I am doing and wait for ammonia to drop and nitrites/nitrites to come up, but I figured I would see if anyone had any ideas or suggestions. Am I on the right track or should I make some changes? Thank you for your help

Thanks, just don't want to start off on the wrong foot.
Here is a pic.

I was kind of expecting to see some change by now, I haven't even had to clean the glass yet and the rocks still look as they did the day I got them. I guess that is a good thing tho. Patients is the hardest part of this hobby.
