I recently bought about 3 fish and put them into my main tank. I know I need to qt them now but to late because they have all gotten ich. My powder blue tang got it first so I put him in a hospital tank to treat with copper. The main tank I was going to try hypo salinity. I think I was doing to hypo salinity wrong as I only dropped the water to 1.018 and I think I was supposed to drop it to 1.008. Since I messed it up, I thought I would just put all the fish into the hospital tank and use the copper treatment but am on standby until I can figure out what to do as my powder blue in the hospital tank died.
I put the copper in the hospital tank and 2 days later did a second dose of copper per the directions. I noticed that when I tested for the copper it was only showing maybe .2 for copper at the most and the instructions said it should be at .5. The powder blue seemed cool in the main tank and was eating like a horse but when I put him in the hospital tank, although the visible ich went away right away, he acted really scared and skittish. On the third day I was going to do a water change in the hospital tank when I woke up but the powder blue had died before I did the water change. I took him out of the water right away when I found him. I tested the water on day 4 as I was late for work on day 3 and noticed the ammonia was around .25. Also I didn't know what to do for filtration in the hospital tank as the filter I had for it had carbon in it so I had no filtration until day 2.5 and I used 100% polyester batting my wife had in her sewing kit. That is the same day the fish died when I put in the polyester batting. I double checked and it is 100% polyester and was new.
So I have two questions. What caused my powder blue to die, and more important what should I do with my other fish in the main tank now. My salinity in the main is now to around a 1.019 and the hospital is around 1.020. The other two new fish are a threadfin butterfly fish, and some type of false moorish idol. My old fish in the tank are 2 clown fish, and 2 tiny gobys. My hospital tank is a 30 gallon and main is a 125. I'm just afraid if I move them to the hospital tank they are all going to die and am tempted to just do hypo-salinity in my main.
Any advice would be appreciated! I learned my lesson the hard way not doing the qt tank and will never do that again!
