So long story short, i added two clownish to my 20 gallon tank last week, new tank had recently completed cycle has a small clean up crew cleaner shrimp and a few corals, daily water testing show:
ammonia -0
nitrite -0
nitrate -5 to 10
ph 8.0
All seemed well, they were hosting a small frogspawn and getting along, until they came down with brooknella and possibly a touch of ich, based on research and my LFS advice i gave the clowns a 15 minute formalin/ MG dip with quick cure. After the first treatment things were looking up. unfortunately after the second treatment i lost one that day and then just lost the second one this evening. I have now learned the importance of a Quarantine tank and just finished setting up my qt.:sad2:
Path forward
I've decided to leave the Display tank fallow for 8 to 10 weeks to eradicate any of the disease.
with that being said, my original plan was to use some of the sponge filters from the DT to seed the quarantine however i am thinking that is not ideal as I could introduce the brook and or ich into the QT. ( i do no want to medicate the QT if i don't have to) so my question is, would i be better off setting the qt tank up with some bio balls or ceramic rings maybe some dry rock and let the tank naturally cycle. Assuming my cycle takes around 4 weeks or so, this would leave me plenty of time to purchase and quarantine the new fish while the DT remains fallow?
