Helsinki Low Iron Reef - 910 liters

A really excellent setup with fantastic photos.

Apologies if I am missing it but have you done a video? Would love to see this if you have :inlove:

Thank you Rega! I haven't made a video but I can give it a try with my Canon 7D and see how it works. Always nice to learn something new :)

Hello, could you please post actual water parameters? thank you :)

I check my values every month when changing my balling and they are usually within "normal" recommended levels.

I hardly ever measure nutrients in the water but adjust feeding and vodka/vinegar/sugar dosing according to visual ques. I use activated carbon and phosphate reducing media that I have in a filter sock where the circulation is good in the equipment department. I change these approximately every 5 weeks. I also use Ozone through my skimmer to kill pathogens, increase ORP and getting rid of the yellowing organic compounds and thereby increasing the light penetration in the water. I usually vacuum the sand when doing water changes (ca 10% per month).

I used chaeto the first year but I have now turned the refuge into a nano with fluorescent species which looks quite nice in the evenings and it is nice to inspect the corals here close up (hard to get good shots). I did not see added benefit from the extra nutrition export from the chaeto once the system was stable and I have never aimed to have a very nutrient poor environment for my corals and I think they appreciate that :). Although chaeto is quite safe compared to most other macro algae I believe they can release chemical compounds that can deter the growth in corals and stony corals in particular (more studies/understanding needed).

Thank you for the response, it's obvious you have excellent feeling knowing the right time from the looks on your tank :) fingers crossed

I stumbled upon your tank while looking for ideas for my new Reef.

Just amazing!

I like how you hide all the equipment behind the wall and i would like to rebuild this.

There are just a few thinks i would like to know:

Is the water only flowing over the overflow comp behind the wall?

Is the ceramic wall glued to the tank?

Does the water only leaves the area through the streampumps or do you use a return pump as well?

Do you have any problems with the water level or noises?

greetings from Germany

Amazing aquascaping and photography skills.. Which macro lens are you using?

Thank you! I am using a canon 60mm macro with extension tubes in a few of the shots.

Welcome to RC and thank you for your interest :). The water also flows through the sides of the ceramic so not just the overflow making the water level more or less level. The ceramic wall is not "glued" to the sides with ceramic all the way in order to let enough water to flow back but tight enough not to let fish pass. I do not use a return pump and the system is quiet and energy efficient.

I do use a small return pump to pump water through a hidden pipe into the "refugium" section and this compartment overflows back into the technical section.

Lovely tank! Your corals all look fantastic; they're getting so big!

Do you have any more recent FTS? The last one was a while ago. I'd love to see how things have grown since then.

Hi guys,

Been a long while so I wanted to share a few shots with you. The system is stable and starting to get a mature impression which I like.

I will try to upload a movie soon.

Happy reefing everybody :).

Great photos and vid! You might be able to brighten up that dead rock space on the left with some bright yellow tubastrea.

Thank you Dave.

Tubastrea would be awesome in that part. Bit worried if I could feed them enough though. Do you have experience with this species?

Nope. Would like the opportunity to try, though. Instead I will live vicariously through your experiences. ;)

Hello,

i'm planning to set up a new tank and want to install an internal sump as well.
I'm very interested in more pictures of your sump since somehow i can't see every picture in your thread. How did you install / set up the skimmer? Did you put something underneath it?
