Technically, it's possible. I had to operate this way when I had to change over from my 75G to my 90G and was letting the overflow box cure to the 90G. The closed channel is very fast (even dialed back). It drained to the mouth of the inlet and caused a vortex that could be heard outside.

Thank you, I guess if I'm going to do it right, I should do it right.

Cully, you'll be fine going with a bigger gap between the elbow and bottom of overflow. I think bean goes 1/4" to keep critters out, but if you're going with the gutter guard then you're good. The valve is where you'll get all your tuning done.
