It has nothing to do with a "look". The fact is that the BA hands down will provide superior surface skimming than any other method. The plus is that it is failsafe, silent and highly reliable. I've built two of them now and will never use anything else.
where are you located?
just looked i see youre in Ohio lol
Yes south of cleveland...
im almost willing to hire someone at this point if i fear getting 75+ gallons on my floor when the 55 floods with my sump =P LOL
what kinda of material is that and what kind of adhesive did you use?
He said he made the box out of acrylic and it looks like he used silicone to adhere the box together. I can see several problems. Silicone does not bond acrylic together very well. Sure it will stick for awhile but as soon as you put water in it, the pressures will let water seep through the seams. If/when it starts to leak and if the pump shuts off the water level will lower all the way to the level of the leak. Hope the sump will hold it. Also if there is a catastrophic failure it could compromise the drains ability to drain the tank and cause an overflow either in the sump or the tank.
Also it looks like the acrylic is 1/8" thick. Should have used 1/4" and used an acrylic cement to glue it all together. I used the thick cement in a tube and never had a problem with it. It is really easy to work with. Sure it doesn't look super professional but you never notice it once it is operational and it is bullet proof.
Silicone can be used to attach the box to the glass tank because the water pressure in the tank helps to hold it against the glass.
Yellow Eyes, please take this advice as constructive criticism and not putting you down. I beg you to redo the box before you go any further and have major problems.

Its really not that bad to do. I have all of my drawings that I made for mine. Drop me a pm if you want some info.
Here's a link to my build thread - http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2389417
I just may PM you.
Im still deciding on the tank size.
I am starting to feel my tank is getting overcrowded already
(3 LPS frags, 1 Acropora, 2 clowns)
once i get tank size definite and make my purchases I will be starting the sump build!
Thanks!
No Worries - If the budget allows I recommend the 48x24x24 120G. the extra 6" front to back is nice over a standard 90G. IMHO quite possibly the perfect size given you have the room for it. The only regret I have on mine was using a 55g (had one already) for the sump. Too Tall and too narrow.
Understandable. A lot of guys choose the 40b for more front to back depth. A 55 is just to narrow to get the rock work in and leave any swim room. Then you can reuse your 40b for your sump when you upgrade to the 120![]()
