Herbie Question?

OK, So as the story goes... I have a edge 57 rimless that I am setting up. I tried using the supplied drain line, lets just say its a bit more than LOUD!!

This has me looking at the herbie method, I have two holes in the bottom of the overflow. One has a 1" bulkhead and the other a 3/4" bulkhead. I was considering using the 1" as primary full siphon but I'm concerned that the 3/4"
wont be enough for the emergency back up....

Looking for opinions, which would you make primary and which the emergency. Return to the tank will be routed over the back of the tank. As far as the return to the tank, I'm considering splitting the return so that I have one on each side of the tank.... Thoughts? Thanks for your help! :thumbsup:

I would use the larger as the emergency, a full siphon on the smaller should move plenty of water through your sump.

Use the larger of the two for the emergency - the 1". Use the 3/4" for the primary siphon. Splitting the over the back return should be fine, just ensure the return lines aren't too deep in the tank (place them as near the surface as feasible) as they'll serve as siphons (until they break the water surface) whenever the sump pump is shut down.
Be sure to put a gate valve not only on the primary siphon to adjust the water height of the siphon, but also on the sump return to adjust/reduce flow if needed. This also means the fittings from the valve back to the sump pump need to be able to handle back pressure.

I run a Herbie using the 1" as main and 3/4" as emergency with an eheim 1260 as pump. The 3/4" handles full siphon just fine when I tested it

I have the same drain configuration on my 60 gallon cube and im using the 3/4 as my siphon line. I used bushings to step everything up to 1" ( doesn't affect flow...makes plumbing easier ) and everything works fine. I'm using an 800 gph tunze and even then I still have to have my siphon line more than half way closed off. On my setup no water goes down the emergency line except if I'm adjusting flow or when the siphon starts. Hope this helps.

3/4" main drain, 1" emergency.
Get a sea swirl for the return line.

Awesome! Thanks for the input.... I was concerned about the 3/4" being able to handle the flow of the main, but was also concerned about using it as an emergency. Nice to hear from some that are running the same setup, with success!
