Wouldn't it be more harmful to remove the clam from the rock it is attached to?

FWIW, I'd see about cutting off the green stars if and only if they start to bother the clam, and get them to re-attach somewhere else. Maybe not the most proactive approach, but hey, if it aint broke yet don't fix it ... (?)

i wouldn't worry about the polyps, everything that i've read say that clams have some sort of immunity to stinging corals, only cut the stars back if you notice discomfort in the clam.

oh btw, the word jealousy comes to mind.
