Here it is at last, my new tank build thread!!!

cbonito
i think that this is true about most fish,,with exceptions of the true predatory fish that it will work as long as they are still in the true juveniles age.

Quick post Thanksgiving update. Hope everyone had a good holiday.

Moved my old tank into the new one and everything made it fine. The rockwork worked out just like I wanted and all the fish seem to be very happy.

Here are a few pics. Stll have some back room stuff to do but overall very happy with the way the tank came out

Rocks - Finished or maybe a few small pieces. Its very open with tons of caves so I am happy with it

Corals - Never finished but very particular about the items that go in. SPS is a given. Will invest in rare ones as I think my system will succeed where my last one failed due to my learning and setup at the 2 year point. I want to expand to some LPS but havent ownded any so dont know that much about them. Very few softies other than a few zoos. I have some GSP over on the side of the tank where I can control it

Fish - maybe a few more but I am happy with the movement I am getting visually

Clams - definately a few more.

hey Clark,
been thinking about this one...do you know about bypass plumbing for pumps that create too much flow?

I dont know if you can do this with your particular set up, but if you continue to run your return pump choked back, you will decrease the life of it.

one way people have fixed that particular problem is to create a bypass valve in their return plumbing. It involves adding a T to the plumbing just above your return pump. After the T, you add a ball valve, (unions would be a good idea too) and run that plumbing back into your sump. You will also need, (if you dont already have one) a ball valve above the T.

By adjusting the two valves, you can divert flow from the return back to the sump, which doesnt create back pressure on the pump.

Again, I dont know if this would work in your system, but I thought I'd pass it on. Here is a really simple Paint drawing I did to show you what I just said...obviously, you should make your bypass plumbing return somewhere away from the return pumps intake....otherwise you'll contribute to the microbubble problem.

I dont know if this will help you out since your micro bubbles are caused by your pump cavitating....but it might be worth trying...

Thanks Nick but I am waiting to hear from Sequence on this one. According to them it shouldnt be happening so hopefully they will replace the pump and I can try with a differant one.

Looks great! Really liking that rock work. I really love how the cube has a more 3d look rather than just having a wall of rock or one row of rock work. I guess the deeper the better. Makes me wish even more I would have went with a 120 rather than a 90.

Have you taken it apart to see if something is wrapped around the impeller? There could be some mung or other that's turning it into a needle wheel.

No I havent. Really dont want to go to that is I dont have to. It has been having this problem before anything even went in the tank, so I am thinking it isnt it.

hey Clark,
I can understand waiting to see what Sequence will do first, I wouldnt want to have to plumb all that either...

Another thought for you....
I saw you were selling your Korallin 1502 Calcium Reactor. If you havent sold it yet, are you aware that korallin is now marketing a sulfer denitrator? Basically its just a Korallin reactor with sulfer media and some other internal baffles to it...but Marine Depot is selling the conversion kit to turn the Ca+ reactor to a S reactor for about $90...

I know you got the reactor new and have a fair amount of money tied up in it and figured this was a way to still use it if no one has bought it yet...

Nick

Forgive my ignorance, but what the heck is that? I havent sold it yet but converting it to something useful would be cool. Can you elaborate a bit nick?

I've only read about sulfer denitrators before, so its not like I have experiance with them.

The basic principal is a container w/ sulfer based media is used in conjunction with low flow rates to grow anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria utilize nitrates to survive.

Korallin appears to have found a way to market a new item without costing too much in the way of parts.

Marine Depot has the complete S-1502 reactor set up for sale, (not cheap) and they also have a conversion kit for the C-1502, changing it over to the S-1502...this is substantially cheaper if you already have a C-1502 lying around.

Here is a link to MD's website.

BTW, Sulfer denitrators are discussed at length in Reef Aquarium Vol 3.

HTH,

Nick

Long time since update. I will get more pics up in a day or so. Am just in the process of adding a frag tank to the system (3 ft x 3 ft x 18 inches). Will update it.

Growth has been great but the system has been challenging for a bit. I will go into that in the days to come but as this is the anniversary of when I started this project (started thread 2 days later) I thought I would update.

Here are a few pics of the tank. More to come
