Hermit crab killing anemone?

So my boyfriend and I had just bought a medium sized carpet anemone for our tank because I wanted to keep the Clarkiis we have happy. Well we got it in the tank and it immediately just attached itself to the glass horizontally. Within 20 minutes our Clarkiis were hosting. The next morning my boyfriend noticed the carpet acting weird. It started shriveling up when he noticed our halloween hermit crab putting dead coral that had gotten out of the filter into the carpet's mouth. He ended up dying shortly after. My boyfriend called our LFS and he said that hermits can kill anemone but upon looking online I can't find anyone who's experienced it. Have you guys ever heard of this happening? We are going to get a smaller reef tank going soon, do you think we should take him out and put him in there to protect future anemone?

Thanks!

There are many people that have different feelings about hermits.

To quote one: The best hermit is on a grill.

Personally I have hermits, but after seeing some of the damage, moving, aggression that some have I will be careful what I get.

The best one, personally, I have ever got was left handed zebra hermit. Never had an issue. My reds and blues I have had to push off or put into the sump.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree hermits have been a bummer from my exp, often picking at snails, but I seriously doubt they could harm a nem, and if they were I'm also pretty certain the clarki's would chase away anything harmful.
I'm wondering why it's on glass and not sand, and that sand looks a bit shallow for what I think is a hadonni.

I have kept anemones and hermits for years without any issues. There is no way to be 100% sure but a more likely explanation could be it didn't acclimate well or it had some health issues. Listing your parameters would also be beneficial. Sounds like the LFS is trying to get out of a refund or store credit.
