hermit crab, what is he doing?

my scarlet hermit crab is doing weird stuff today, he has been standing on his head well on his big claws really. is he trying to molt? he seems to be trying to get out of his shell but then he just walks away like nothing happend and goes about his buisness. then a few hours later he started this odd behavior again. what is he doing?
does it take a few hours for them to molt? i have no shells for him, i did order some the other day so hopefully they will arrive sometime next week

Mine does that sometimes too. Mine has plenty of shells to switch to if he wants. He's almost 3 yrs. old.

I noticed one of my blue leggs doing the same thing a week or so ago. I appeared to me that he was 'fanning' all of the poo out of the inside of his shell. I have no idea if that is what it really was but that is sure what it looked like.

Well, when ya'll find out what he is doing let me know, I also have red and blue legged hermits and every now and then when its quiet I hear this clink...clink...clink so I get up to see what it is and its the hermits, doing the same thing your's is doing in the pic. I don't see them doing that against any rock just the glass.

well hes fine so maybe he was doing a clean out like ya said lol
i wonder if water changes have anything to do with it? cuz he did this several hours after a water change, the other one however did not do this
he didnt molt yet, i sure wish those new shells will get here allready
