When the lights go out and only moon lights are on in the tank I usually takea seat and lookinto the tank...

Tonight i saw some blue leged hermits fighting over some new shells i put in there today...

I moved another shell near them and they stopped fighting, then one guy takes the otherdudes shell and then finds a better one, some he moves into that one...these guys are too funny...shell awapping and fighting over prime realestate

i love watching my hermits fight, i have about 100 blue and 100 whites and i swear at night majority meet for the annual nightly gang brawl its entertaining.

I saw a big hermy take a small hermy out of his shell and got in it . Then the small hermy went in to the big ones old shell. I have two Mithrax scultus crabs . one had the other one and I thought he was hurting the other one . so I puled them a part. The little one ran right back to the bigger one. I thought they were fitting, they were just making crabby love!

Watching hermit crabs swap shells is funny. I've seen one flip-flop between two shells several times before deciding that a third shell was just right.

What's not as funny is when a hermit crab decides it wants a shell that still has a snail inside. People argue all the time about which types of hermit crabs are more or less likely to kill a snail for its shell (and a meal). Some RC members have given up on hermit crabs entirely after losing too many snails.

While we're on the subject, beware of LFS and online retailer estimates of the number of hermit crabs and snails you need. Sometimes they're padded to increase sales. Start with fewer than the recommended number, and only add critters if the current batch can't keep up with the uneaten food and algae. Starting with too many crabs and snails will lead to a lot of starvation deaths, which in turn leads to a high nitrate concentration in your water, which feeds the nuisance algae.
