Im going to be in SoCal next weekend, I was wondering if any of you use hermits & snail from the beach? are they reef safe? Im going to be down on mission beach. Can anyone tell me of some prime spots to find them? Thanks

They won't be safe in our reef tanks. Water temps in So Cal run about 66-70 degrees during the summer. Reef tanks run between 76-82 degrees, so the inverts wouldn't make it............

I believe its illegel to remove them from the beach without a permit. Beside they are the cooler water sp anywas unless your doing a reef of this type. Someone else with more knowledge can post info for you.

lolz... call me lucky but i have had 8 hermits for over a year that i got from San Pedro, and they are still kickin fine... legal? i doubt it... but they are still alive! completely reef safe. temps range from 72-82 in my tank. in fact these hermits along with a few others are the only things that survived my tank crash! strong puppies!

haha yea

i have a bunch of nassarius type snails a bubble snail some gobies and an urchin from mission bay

you can collect with a fishing license...you cannot collect in tidepools or state reserves.

there are protected species that you can't take either.

Last I saw it was a $500 fine if you get caught taking live critters from the beach.

so that means if you dont get caught everything is free game:D

i have a fishing license and one of those marine stamps I KNOW!
i go fishing almost every other day... love it! :p

Not knowing your local laws, but knowing some here, I strongly suggest you investigate what is and is not allowed by law in what ever spot you wish to collect. If a fishing license is all that stands between you, and being legal, get the fishing license. If you're not permitted to collect what you want, go to the LFS and buy it. Think of how ridiculous you'd feel spending a night in jail, and a day in court over a few snails and hermit crabs.

Well... in all the areas where you can find snails and hermits... it IS a $500 fine to remove them...

And the dfg casually walk those areas... so DONT do it.

Go buy them for a dollar.

check out www.keyscritters.com for some tropical snails and hermits... I got some from a goup buy a few years ago and some are still doing fine.

i have seen them fine a person for taking stuff. i believe they were taking urchins......its sooooo not worth it.

I went to some of the tidepools and have seen starfish, sea slugs, cucumbers, snails, hermits, and octopus. I have taken home about 20 hermits and put them in my tank before, they were all dead by day 2 and I have a really lively and healthy tank.
