I'm ordering a Nikon D80 with the 18-135 mm nikon lens. Also I'm buying a Tamron 90 for macro shots..

I don't know much about DSLR but I'm hoping to learn...I do have one question.

I understand you have to buy a UV filter to protect the lens and also benefit from improved color quality, but what are the mm designations for?

I see UV filters that are 55 mm or 58mm or 62..which do I need for my two lenses now?

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: Actually I'm debating whether to get the 18-135 mm kit or the 18-55 mm kit and buy an additional 55-200mm lens...Which would be better?

the 18-135 gets food review but most people seem to like the 18-55 for image quality.

The mm stands for how big around the lens is, the information on the lens should give a filter size. Unless your using specialty (polorizing or warming) filters they likly will not help image quality, some of the cheaper filters actually hurt image quality.

the Tamron 90mm is a fine lens but you may want to look at the nikon 105mm VR.

Also if your looking to take pics of your tank be prepared to invest in a decent tripod, or likly your images will tend to look blured from movement.

the 18-55mm lens designation refers to focal length - the smalled the wider the view the larger the more "zoom"
the mm in filter designation has to do with the diamter of the lens.

I have a D80 and it shoudl be plenty of camera for you for quite some time, Congrats
