How's that Carpenter's doing down there??? Adam left me a message it wasn't doing too well... I've been meaning to call, but haven't gotten the chance... Oh, and I don't have the number... :D

We should all hang out again...maybe sushi is in order?

I'm missing my reef-related interaction.

EvilMel, my tank needs some help/advice, come on over!!

lol

Here's the only sage wisdom I can give...and it's words to live by:

a) Check to make sure your makeup water is good, then water change like crazy (unless you are cycling, then I have no idea).

b) make sure your alkalinity is on the high end of the spectrum...this helped clear up my algae problems back in the day.

I'll be at the office tomorrow

..............
I cut back on my lights for a few weeks and it did help but now that my pc's are running again it's starting to grow back of course but it's no where as bad as it use to be. I think my nitrates are a contributing issue as they will not go down. They stay about 15-30 regardless of my water changes.

That aside my PH is still low 7.8.- 7.9 and i'm not sure about my calcium & alkalinity as i don't have test kits for those.

I also went ahead and bought two cleaner shrimp, 20 Cerith Snails, 12 Astraea Turbo Snail , 8 Nassarius Snail , and 8 Scarlet Reef Hermit Crabs hoping they'd eat some of it...I'm afraid to buy fish at this point...

Here are some pic's and extra's

Doesn't look near as bad as you made it sound on the phone!!!

It's really a good idea to manage your calcium and alkalinity for these guys as well...promotes proper molting. Oh and magnesiium too...right? Mg2+ for good molting? Or is it copper? Heck...I don't know.

*note to mods...notice I said heck*

i dont think its copper.Iodine and calcium for shrimp and crabs.Copper kills all inverts....Is that all base rock if so you may want to add some live rock to help seed what you have

Melly~ You're thinking of iodine... But dosing too much iodine will cause problems with inverts molting too often... And as Dave said Cu is toxic...

ahhh yes...see...nothing good to post!!! hah hah.

Ok...please don't add copper to your tank.

That's some nice looking rock. I have hair algae issues too. I've read on RC that raising you Mg also helps. I'm in the process of that and Alk to the highest end of the "normal" levels. Pistol shrimps are getting urinated :0 about me plucking out their homes every two weeks to remove hair algae.

Oh, what I wanted to say about the rock... you should invest in a small powerhead and tape it to a pvc rod to blow out all the crude that will accumulate in all those crevices.

It looks like your tank is still fairly new and just going through a phase hopefully. If that's dried base rock some of that has been known to contain a good bit of phosphate. Hair algae always comes down to one thing....phosphate. Even if you aren't registering any with a hobbyist kit the hair algae is likely using up the inorganic/unbound form the kit tests test for before it registers. That still leaves lots of organic phosphate in the water column to fuel the hair algae as well.
