Hi everyone! 90 gal reef set up thread.

Hello to all.
I have kept salt water tanks in the past, but never had them going for very long periods of time due to moving to different apartment and sometimes financial reasons with having three kids.

Now it has been a few years since I have done any real aquarium keeping. I do have a 55 set up now which has been neglected for the past almost three years. I have just started over the past few months to take care of it and bring it back to life. Cleaning it up and water changes. Going well so far.

I have always wanted to have what I call a "show" tank and this time Im going to make it happen. It may happen slower than my wife would like but it will eventually will.
You see, I have bought the brand new tank and stand already (it was on sale and could not pass it up) and it is sitting in my dining room on the adjacent wall from my 55 gal tank.
that's why my wife wants it set up already she doesn't want it sitting there forever just taking up space.

I am planing to get new flooring done before setting up the new tank because ti is going to be replacing the 55 and its on carpet.
I'm thinking about going with hardwood for the floor. so that needs to be done first. Hopefully in the next few weeks.

The tank I bought is an Oceanic 90 tech tank with the stainless stand. I do have a few pieces of equipment I will be using from the 55.

I plan on having my sump in the basement. this way I can use a bigger sump. Was thinking about a 55, will that work? also I am needing a suggestion on a submersible return pump. There will be about 10 feet of head to the returns. I will also have at least 2 powerheads. I was thinking of getting the Hydor Koralia 3 or 4s. I need some input on that choice as well.

Will a oceanic plus model 6 protein skimmer work for this 90 I have a ehiem 1250 to run it. Also I know nothing about how to run or tune it. I did use it on one of my tanks at some point and it did work but would like to know more about it from someone who owns or owed one.

Im sure I will have a million questions. thanks in advance!

ps..I will try and get some pics up of my 55 and the new tank.

The only objection I have is the skimmer there a alot of better skimmers to choose from IMO. Check out reef octopus skimmers,MSX , ASM I have been hearing good things about the MSX skimmer though, they all come with pumps, use your ehiem for mixing salt, I have never ran a sump from the basement, but if I did I would run the plumbing up though the wall in case you ever move the tank the wall is easy to fix. And get a high head pump

I agree with the above suggestions regarding the skimmer. For Powerheads I'd do 2 K4's. That's was I was running in my 90 and it worked well. I think the 55 will be a decent sump for a 90g and you already have it so that's probably your best choice. Although it would be nice to have a refuge while you are at it :)

K4's are a good place to start. Your probably going to want to do an external pump though. I don't know much about powerful pumps that can push up from a basement, but there are a lot of tank of the months on reefkeeping.com that use them, so just look through some of those. An internal will add a lot of heat to your system, so definitely go external. And get a monster skimmer, capable of handling 300 gallons or more. Don't forget to document your build and post a ton of pictures. Definitely interested in seeing you plumb from the basement etc. Welcome back!

there are pro's and cons' to each type of pump, not all internal pumps produce alot of heat external is better for that but there is a better chance of external pump's leaking just why the opions and get the pump YOU fell safe with just make sure in has enough head preasure to pump that far

Thanks for all the input so far. I'm set on my decision to get the two K4s at least to start.
As for plumbing to the basement, I did think of going through the wall to not have to cut a hole in the new flooring. but did also see someone who had a great idea of using the same size hole that a floor vent will fit into. so i can cover it up if necessary.
If I was going through the wall would it be ok to use flex tubing or pvc? if i was going straight through the floor i plan on using just the pvc to plumb it.
I'm currently looking to make a decision on a submersible pump. that can push enough water at 10 ft of head. Does anyone have any experiences with quietone pumps? would they be a good option for my system? or if any one can suggest a submersible pump that will fit the bill.

The more reading I do here on RC the more I realise I know so little about aquariums!

Will try for some pics this weekend.

Along with the other questions I have here are a few more.
I am looking at getting a ro/di unit. Was checking out ebay, Does anyone think either one of these would be better than another. I like the fact that they come with the drinking water tank and faucet.

I also am thinking about some sort of controller for the PH, lights and things like that. For the price is this one any good

Or can someone suggest a better one for around the same or less cost? Any help would be great!

I purchased a 5 stage ro di unit from bulk reef supply for 170 and got a free float valve with it. It is pretty nice and makes up to 75 gpd p

I had a few min to snap a few pics. I am still needing some suggestions for a return pump and other stuff please reffer to posts above. Thanks

Here is the existing 55

I am using a mag 24 at a 13 foot head. The flow is good, but it is VERY noisy. I am switching to an iwaki 55rlt external pump in the next few days. I also have a 90 gal and using K5's.

Hey all,
Just bought my ro-di unit today. I would appreciate some extra input on the things listed in the above posts.
will be looking to buy the return pump soon.

You might want to rethink those odyssey lights, I bought a odyssey CF fixture and it was very low quality. I have a 90 and run ]four Hydor Koralia, one k4 and three k3. For return I use a little giant #4 pushes the water through the manifold then through at least 5'' of 3/4' double returns.

Hey everyone,
Sorry its been a while. I went with my brother in-law to pick up my flooring last week. I have decided to go with a prefinished brazilian tiger, solid wood floor. I wave a buddy of mine coming over to help me put it down this Monday and Tuesday. Hope all goes smoothly with that.
I also picked up 2 used maxijets with the sure-flow mods at a good price.

Well tomorrow morning is the day the new floor goes down. Got some of the stuff out of the room tonight and first thing in the morning we will get the rest out and start ripping up the carpeting.
Posted a few pics of the room as it is now and will take some more when its done.
Also a pic of my new six stage ro-di unit.
I know its not too interesting yet I but hope some of you are tagging along.

an atc800 controller is useful, its cheap and works well, great if you use a couple of small fans and a small heater to maintain temperature, you can get it programmed to swing just 1 degree as well, worth considering if money is tight but you need a controller.

Was thinking about a mag 24 for the return. I used the head loss calc with the projected system and it was saying about 900 gph. I plan on doing one inch pvc to 2-3/4" returns. it will also feed a fuge. If I need to throttle it back some I could always return some of the flow back to the sump.
Do you think this pump will have enough power to grow a bit with the system a bit if i want to use it to feed other things? or do you think it's too much?
Thanks.

i bought mine from ebay and found that because i set it up for us to drink as well its not going to last as long between membrane and filter changes.

i need to get access to a TDS meter so i know when i need to change it.

A little bump for my last question about a possible return pump.
Floor is done will post some pics of it going down soon.

Need some input on a return pump for this tank. Check 1st post and 3 posts up from this one for details. Thanks
