Hi I'm new to saltwater, here is my build

Now I'm set back a few more weeks, :headwallblue:

Tank runs fine but just too loud for my living room.
Can get the tank to run pretty quietly but I have to "tune" the drain with a ball valve and that's not something I'm comfortable with on only drain.

I cut off all the teeth on my box to help with linear flow, it did a little and was able to open drain a tad more. Still not where I wan to be.

So I ordered a new overflow box today, should have 20 inches of linear flow as opposed to the 10 I have now........we will see if that works if not will drill another hole for dry emergency drain and "tune" the main drain.

Well I might of messed up my tank without thinking...............

I cut the top brace off thinking it was just for the glass tops I am no longer going to use.........I was wrong :headwalls:

The Fix:

2 peices of 5 inch wide 1/4 inch plate glass cut to fit

Going to hold them in place with RTV103, has a tensile strength of 400psi, is used by tank builders, and is black.

Other than that, scraped my first overflow box and got one coming twice as long and deeper.

A fellow reefer helped with drilling my tank (again)

So now I have two 1.5 inch drains and am going to run a Herbie style "tuned"
drain on 1 of them and use the other as a dry emegrency drain.

try putting a piece of filter foam on your overflows & sticking about 1" inside the bulkhead. That should quiet it down.

You can try the plastic wrap trick too. Get a piece of plastic wrap about 6" long and let it run down the inside the bulkhead. You'll need to attach it somehow obviously so it doesn't end up in the sump. The water will flow down the plastic wrap and help quiet the drain. Sounds crazy but it works.

UPDATE

Redid the main drain took out the t fitting and got a y fitting. Also got the secondary drain done.

Also installed new larger overflow box and put in new center brace that fits snug against both front and back glass.

Used RTV 103 this time so everything should be on nice and tight.

The drain lines will quiet down with time. They need to build up some residue to help "smooth" out the flow. Patients really pay off in this hobby! Everything looks great for being your first build. Welcome!

Redid the drain again, I learned that ball valves suck, gate valves are the way to go.

I think this is the stup I will run. Once I wrap the pipes in insulation system should be pretty quite.

Some medical problems sidelined me for a while but got it up and running this weekend.

Cycle started!

80.5℉ on temp probe
79.6℉ with IR temp gun
1.025 salinity

Seems to be running good, skimmer needs some adjusting as it was overflowing with foam/water this morning.

Looking good, have you put together a stock list yet?

Not really, I did buy a pair of clowns that are in a sump of another members tank until my tank is ready.

Thinking about a watchmen goby and a few chromis as well

Pic of the tank today after adding some fully cured live rock.
