Hi MTRC.. Restarting Reefing :)

Hey All,

I was never much of a RC person when I started getting into reefs in 02 as I felt the community was a bit to big, so I tended to hang out at some of the smaller forums. Now that I've found out there is a good Nashville Reef club, that may change some :)

My Name is Paul, and I've been in the Nashville Area for around 15 years now. I work in the Healthcare Patient Safety industry for a small company. I recently got Married to my wife Christy, Bought a townhouse, got a dog, and have my first baby on the way in December :P With all that said, I've got the blessing from the S/O to go ahead and restart the hobby I've been talking about restarting for the past 3 years..... REEFING :)

Anywho, I'm not planning a dream tank, but I am looking into a medium sized tank to get back into things. Prob going with a 60-90 range, but technically this is my first tank. While I never managed to get a big tank going, I collected a number of items with the hopes of one day getting back into it, while Actually doing a 5G nano for a few years.

So in my possession I have recently pulled from storage after 5 years....

Custom Sea Life 2 Lamp 65W Ballast (tested & works with Actinic bulb)
One 24" Actinic PC Bulb
One New In Box USHIO UHI-S 175W 10k MH Bulb
One New In Box HIT 175W E39 10K MH Bulb
Two Used (unknown hours) USHIO UHI-S 175W 10k MH Bulb
(No Ballast for the MHs)

Pumps/PowerHeads:
ViaAqua 4900
SEN-900
MaxiJet 1200
MagDrive (1200 I think, may be 900)

Skimmer:
Red Sea Berlin Turbo (Has Powerhead)

Misc:
16G Bowfront Tank.
15W UV Sterilizer
Coolworks IceProbe Chiller (never used it)
1/2 Tub of Instant Ocean (Was Sealed, think its ok)
Refractometer (recalibrated)
Small 3g Auto-Topoff kit, with Float Switch. (Never been used)
bout 50 Lbs of DeadRock
Kent Marine Maxxima 24GPD RODI system
2 Feet of LocLine Black Plumbing.
Bunch of 3/4" Plumbing parts like Gate Valves, Unions, etc.

I've got some Diamond Bit Holesaws on the way as well, with the ability to do upto a 60mm hole in glass.

The skimmer was pulled off an existing tank, and never cleaned or anything, just put into storage for the past oh 5 years. Its been taken apart as much as I could, and sitting in a Vat of 50% vinegar 50% distilled water, along side a few parts from the RO/DI unit. Prob going to scrub it down this week, and get it cleaned up as much as possible. I've been told elsewhere the skimmer is crap, but limited funds dictate I either use it, or just wait longer. I'm curious to see what it can do either way, and since I've already got it... may as well try.

The RODI is getting a new 75GPD membrane, flow restrictor, DI, and filters for. While the unit itself only has 3 Chambers, I purchased a 4th to add another PreFilter to it.

Soon as I get the Water Filter going, I'm going to start Cooking the DeadRock with some rock from the critter as well.

To pass time, I've been working on a 65 Gallon Idea, with a "deluxe" Stand setup. You can take a look at the google Sketchup I've been working on here (its currently a little overbuilt. I'll prob be drafting another simpler design soon):
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=d50dbf86ca9ed256d804b369b9947ae2

The General Idea is a 65G tank, with a 20G Long sump. I'd drill 2 Holes for the Overflow, 1 for the Return, and then 3 Holes for the Closed Loop. I've also considered placing the CLS returns within the RockWork, by plumbing PVC in the tank, doubling as a frame. The LocLine gives a number of interesting options for water outlets with this scenario.

The stand design allows for the TopOff system to reside in the extra space, as well as hide all of the plumbing & equipment.

Course this is all just a work in progress (more like an idea?), but since I've found some Nashville reefers I figure thats more people that can poke holes in my ideas and give suggestions.

So Hello MTRC!

Sounds like you are off to a good start and have a good plan.

Hi Paul,
Looks like you have a really good start. One part of this hobby is always wanting more/different equipment, but as long as you can get something set up and working ok to get your feet wet, you can tinker endlessly.

Brian

Welcome to the club bro. I have only recently placed membership and have felt warmly welcomed. These are all great people in the club. Hope to see you at the upcoming meeting!

Well I'm not a member yet ;) but I'm anticipating joining once I get past the inital hurdle of getting the right equipment, in my case a Tank, stand and canopy.

I look forward to getting things going again, and hope to expand my knowledge of this hobby.

It would probably be worth your while to get involved before you get all the equipment. There is a wealth of knowledge in the club, and you could see other member's setups which would give you ideas. Not to mention you would also get a 10% discount at the LFSs in town that could help with some of the startup costs.

I have to agree with Crumbletop alot of knowledge here and you could pick peoples brains and the hobby more. I know many times in life I wish I had more advice before I made some choices. Wish you the best.

Yep... that 10% discount Jack mentioned could very well let your membership dues pay for themselves in one trip to one of our LFSs. :D

Welcome back to the hobby!!! WOW you keep all your junk like me....

You just never know when you need them again, but I have gotten rid of some stuffs cause I made a deal with the devil if I combine 3 boxes into one and whatever don't fit in that one box I had to get rid of it. What if I need those stuffs again.......

Not to mention the free things and drawings at the meetings is well worth the small dues I got a bucket of salt and a skimmer at the last meeting.

I've got the Form, and If I can come this weekend, I'll bring it & a check with me, assuming the person I need to pay is there.

Also, got my Filters in. Basicly converted my Maxxima 24GPD to a 75GPD unit. I changed it around some as well. I got another Filter housing, and I am using the 3 Housings on the Unit as Prefilters, (sediment & 2 carbon) and I'm going to have the new Housing handle the DI after the RO.

One question though.... How many O-Rings should the Cap of the RO housing have? I've got 1, but I've read there is 2. Anyone confirm?

There will probably be a couple of us there that you could pay. :)

I'm not sure on the RO housing. I think mine only has one (had to change it recently), but its from Air, Water, Ice.

If it was working with only one in there, maybe it would be fine with just one.

I plan on being there, just look for the old man, (that's Norman, not Jack) of course Jack can take your money also, but he just hands it over to me:) Look forward to seeing you there

I'll give it a whirl. From what I understand most RO Housings are pretty standard in design. I'll put the RO in place tonite with the DI and see what we get out of it.

I ran into some plumbing issues last night too with the hose pipe in the Garrage. Apparently all new homes have to have a Vacuum Break on them, to prevent back siphons from happening. All good until the vaccum part doesn't work for crap.

So I took it off & went to lowes, and guy knew what it was, but its apparently a specialty size or something. Fine threaded, and the fitting is larger then a standard hose connection, so I couldn't just bypass the vacuum break even.

Ended up using the Kitchen area (may get installed under counter anyways) to test it out.

So onto Ace hardware after work to figure out how to get around this problem.

I won a +$300 Vortech powerhead at last month's meeting! We also had 25% off store inventory, free pizza, free DT's supplements, and a great time with friends.
What size tank are you wanting to set up?

I'm running the numbers on a Tank. I've got enough stuff to get my 16 up and running, but I'm still in the planning stages. I'd like to do a 75, 90, or 125, but I'm leaning towards a 65G, or just kicking off with the 16G for now.

Really just comes down to funds. With a baby on the way, just need to be cautious about my spending.

Also, I think you're supposed to lube the o-ring when putting it back on. I used dish-washing soap.

Brandon

Soap = phosphates... no? Probably not enough to matter, but just a thought.

For all of my reef lube needs I prefer food safe keg lube (I get it from All Seasons because I keg my own beer and soda), but I also think they carry some type at Lowes/HD.

Air water ice's instructions include using dish soap.. I thought it was wierd too.

I thought it was a little weird as well, but exactly like Mnemic, I was just following the H20 Guru's advice. :)
