Hi there - new to the hobby

Hi folks! I found this forum through Sk8r's thread in the newbie section. I don't have a reef tank yet but am starting to set one up and hope to have it running in about six months or so - limited monthly budget so we're going slow. Plus I have a lot to learn. I'd like some anemones eventually after the tank has been established a while, because I think they're neat, but am otherwise not sure beyond "I like corals! Scuba diving was fun and I wish I could go now." Been doing a lot of reading here and elsewhere and thinking about a 40B setup.

I was hoping to meet some local folks and get ideas of resources so here I am! Does anyone know when/where the PMASI meetings are? The site seems to be down.

Thanks!

Welcome wbwhale. My name is Dawn and I live in the North Hills, Gibsonia area. I have a 2 tank sharing 1 sump system of about 70 gallons total. One tank is a mixed reef, the other is a dedicated seahorse, and pipefish display fuge. I will help you with any questions if I can.

Welcome - I am also in the north hills. a few miles from Dawn- The local club seems pretty inactive. I used to be in it years ago and there were about 20-30 people there at each monthly meeting . I dropped out of the hobby several years ago and just got back in 6 weeks ago. I was really surprised by the low local activity in the hobby. I guess everybody just does the online thing. I did some inquiring and the current president did email me- I think I have the email address somewhere if you want it.

please don't hesitate to ask if you need anything and where to get it. Experience of others will really help you in this hobby.

Also Misled is in New Kensington and a very nice guy who is a "moderator" here on R/C.

Don't go spreading rumors again Ted!!!!

I'm close also, just up 28. If you want a few shrooms after you get set up, scream. No charge, but my current set-up is gone around the first of the year. You're in the fun stage of building right now. You can ask us any questions you have, we've all been there. Try not to cheap out though. You end up just spending more money in the long run. Think RO/DI first. If you need some buckets filled, just ask.

cheers, welcome to the group.

i'm in the south hills. post up here when you're ready for corals, there are usually plenty of free frags around here.

i'm in the middle of a tank move, and house move currently, but hopefully in a few weeks the frags will be flowing again. :)

Hey wb, from Monroeville area here. Just got back into the hobby myself after a lengthy break.

acer: I too miss the PMAS meetings, when I was there there were always quite a few people and it was a lot of fun.

Maybe we can arrange an informal meeting of sorts?

Always glad to help when I can, but I think you'll find my asking more questions than answering them. My first attempt at the hobby was not done as well as it should have been, so I am somewhat starting over.

I think that a great idea- even just a for a burger and a shake and 4-5 of us getting together.

How about an early sat evening ( before busy time -so like 4 PM) at a place on Mcknight Road or maybe on Rt 8 around Aetna = somewhat easy for all to get to. Any ideas what place?

I'm in. There is the McDonalds, Burger King and Eat n Park down there near where Middle Road meets Rt 8. Eat n Park might be the most relaxed if they don't mind us having a couple of tables for a little while. I am ok with anything on McKnight too.

I'm in also. Burger King has chicken fries right now. Just kidding, I think Eat n Park would be the better place too. At least till they try to kick us out.

all the hours i spent in various Eat N' Parks as a teenager sipping coffee endlessly and they never kicked us out. i doubt they will mind a few old reefers. ;)

i'll catch you all on the next one. been a little crazy lately.

I hadn't thought about it - but I don't have plans this Saturday ( 18th)- Anybody else?

which "eat N park"- on Rt 8 = by Aetna or in Gibsonia ( by the Turnpike entrance/exit)?

bummer- hate water on the floor.

Well- lets get a count for 4:00 at Eat N Park on Rt 8 by the turnpike exit. Other suggestions also welcomed.
