Hibiscus, Plumeria, and other Tropicals in So Cal

***Flowering Plants I should say, shrubs, trees, flowers, anything really.

Do any of you guys grow Hibiscus? I am wondering the best place to put a few. I also read they like to be watered twice a day in the summer. I will probably start two or three in large pots. I have a spot in my backyard that gets morning sun, but gets shaded by my house about 4pm.

Any tips? I am going for a sort of tropical farm house look hahaha if that is even a thing. So any other plant or flower suggestions would be great.

I am also learning about Plumeria... have about 35 cuttings from friends that I am currently trying to root. I also have some seeds coming to try.

Anyways, any suggestions?

Anyone have a nice garden in So Cal with some of the above that I could see one day? Pointers? Anything? Thanks!

I water my hibiscus and plumeria about 3 times a week. They do fine on this schedule both in the ground and in pots. For plumeria cuttings just dry out the stems a couple days if they are fresh cuts and plant and water every other day in well draining soil. They are both really easy unless you stop watering them or water them all the time and rot the roots.

Hibiscus does great. I have hibiscus here in the Antelope Valley Cody. In fact I have a puppy that ate both my Rose of Sharon bushes down to the ground and they've come back. I don't water them very much at all and when I do I dump the dogs water dish on them and it's been as high as 111 here recently. They're very hardy

Depending on the space you have- Giant Bird of Paradise are what make many tropical resorts look awesome.

And Canna Lilies are easy/proliferate well but not overly, and several different combos of flower/foliage available.

I currently have Canna and could easily give you 3 varieties. Just cut down my giant BOP (bc of small townhouse yard) but prob some sprouts still available to cut out.

But both of these are pretty cheap to buy a to HD, and a $6 plant can look ridiculously awesome wthin months.

Most of what I read said to only water the cutting once, then don't water it until the roots grow and you can see the leaves or new foilage growing.

For established plants, once a week seemed about average for the plumerias. I wonder since we live in So Cal is that why they need a little more water? More dry heat with less rain compared to the tropics?

I've got them in cactus mix and perlite.

Maybe we can trade some cuttings one day. Have any pics of yours? I'd love to see. I have a bunch of plumeria seeds germinating currently that I ordered online.

Thanks Rik. Do you have them in full sun? Do they get shade at any point in the day?

Thanks for the suggestion! Those are beautful and would work well I think. Happen to have any pictures of your Canna Lilies? How big do the plants get overall? I did order several day lilies that I just got the other day. Oranges, Reds, Yellows, lots of nice ones. I'll be planting those this weekend.

into gardening for sure. however I chose to garden for food and the reward of them. In the yard I have planted the following trees throughout the years
Orange, dwarf
tangerine, dwarf
lemon/ lime hybrid
walnut
almond
nectarine
avocado, 2.

in the garden
tomatoes many variations
bell peppers various colors
chili peppers including ghost peppers
blueberrys
raspberries a few types, some yellow that are very tasty
strawberries
corn
asparagus.
herb garden for seasoning.
eggplant
cucumber
squash.
lettuce when it was cooler.

I love having all of these and taste so much better grown then bought at the store.

Cody I have a huge pink Plumeria if you want a cutting. I also have green and white Agave that my wife pulled up I think there is a big green one as well.

Mind bringing me some tonight? Thanks! I'll take the Agave as well if that's OK? I'll text ya.

Do you take any precautions to keep the birds or other animals away?

Cody, as I'm looking at them right now with the sun which is to the north right now, my block wall is blocking full light as these are grown against the wall

Cody, the birds like our grapes and nectarines. Presently netting over the grapes. No other pest as of yet. We did have a mole last year but it is gone

I've got a bird eating our cherry tomatoes I think. Well something is and its not me. May have to cover the planting beds.

Hibiscus seem to have a tough time growing in the OC, white flies just take them over. I have not seen the white fly problem in the IE though. This is my personnel observation when I worked in the OC.
