High Alk and Maxima Mantle Extension

Obligate Coral Killer
Hi all,

I'm a relative n00b to clams, although I've had a reef for about 5 years.

One observation I've made is that when my alk is too high (12-14 dkH) my maxima clam holds it's mantle very close to the shell. I've been lowering my alk recently and noticed that it seems to be loosening up (more free floating).

Am I nuts or is this a standard response by maximas?

Thanks,
Ed

i have a Triacnia Crocea that eats ALK and CaC12 like candy. i waited one day after intro to tank (70g) and tested. my ALK droped 3.4meq/L, to 1.7meq/L, and CaC12 droped 24ppm. it will probably be used up very soon if its responding as this one has. though the mantle never seemed to change much except for more vibrant purple and blue. REEF-ON!

Keep on watching for a couple more days and write down your alk, and the amount of mantle showing. then you should have a better idea

what is the recommended alk level? i didn't think one was set. i'm guessing 10-12?

That is what I was shooting for, but overshot. I've read that's a good range for SPS.
