Hi

today i have checked my water

No3 = 5
P.H = 8.4
Alk = 2.9
Cal = 650

I know my calcium is high but i want to ask if this level of calcium will harm my lfe stock or not
i just have fishes and 2 carpet

dont know about your live stock but i know its not good for your live rock...are you adding any source of cal?? if so what??

Mine is also high.

Why is it bad for live rock? Never heard that.

he said bad for your livestock, you want it to be between 400-450, thast what natural seawater is, 650 is too high, your alk is too low you need to balance them out

No, he said live rock.

I don't think it is really bad or that it will harm your live stock, but it is not ideal, I would just stop adding lime water for a while till the level is around 450

How long has the tank been set up for? Just FYI, most if not all new tanks go through a period of instablity. Calcium and Alk or particularly effected and will usually not stabalize for at least 70 days or so. otherwise, a low alkalinity will cause a rise in calcium and vise versa, they're very connected that way. Also, are you dosing lime water because your tank is using up enough calcium and alk to warrant the additional supplement or are you adding it cause that's what you were told it needed? I have had my mixed reef, lot's of LPS, some SPS, and several leathers/softies, also have a clam. I've yet to have to add any calcium or alk supplements in over 2 years now. The load on them isn't enough to warrant additional supplements that my weekly water changes don't fix.

what kind of salt mix are you using?

because kalk should not really raise your ca THAT much...you're just replacing evaporated water with limewater right?

also what is in the tank? do you know how much alk/ca your tank inhabitants are using?

high calcium shouldn't adversley effect live STOCK or ROCK...unless you have calcium precipitation

Yea I would double check the test results. If you have a lot of coralline algae that can cause usage of alk and calk. I have a tankful of coralline and I dose a 2 part 24/7 to maintain alk and calk levels. If I did not have any coralline I probably would not dose much of anything as Adam does not.

I wish I could get rid of the coralline.
If the test is correct you may want to stop the limewater until the levels come down. You can dose baking soda to raise the alk.

Regards,

Pat

If the alkalinity is 2.9 meq/L, then I'd suggest stopping the limewater and dosing baking soda, dissolved in fresh water, to supplement alkalinity while you let the calcium drop on its own. I don't know why the calcium got that high, but limewater adds alkalinity and calcium, and can't have caused this problem on its own.

I agree that doublechecking all the test kits would be a good idea. Also, is RO-DI water being used for topoff, or tapwater?

Well, tapwater can lead to various problems. I'd check some freshly-mixed saltwater, to see what effect the tapwater might be having.
