I do agree that sometimes "named high end" corals can look downright mediocre. I had a Reef Raft Orange Passion which never changed from poo brown. But I've also found that generally named high end corals are really nice corals and knowing their name/lineage can help guide you to the coral and color you're looking for. For the most part, expensive corals are expensive because they're really nice corals and look great.
I went to the last coral show in Santa Clara and I swear every nice looking coral I asked about was $200+. I wasn't shopping names, I was shopping colors. It just so happened that the nicest looking ones (IMO) were named expensive corals.
I've got some good stuff Dan, but they're not frag-able and I need to grow them out. Hopefully if more of us start collecting the good stuff, we'll be able to start trading them around in the future.
For now I'd recommend Tim (tfp) and John (Coral2002). Both have nice stuff (and are nice guys!) and sell from time to time.
