high pH and high alkalinity

Heya,

Tank's been up a month now. I have high pH (8.6) and high alkalinity (my test kit only yields low, high, or fine.)

I squirted the requisite amount of chemical into the tank from my test kit, not sure how it'll work... Other than water changes, any ideas on what to do?

Whoa Chris,

You "squirted the requisite amount of chemicals into the tank from my test kit". :eek1:

For A I would get some good test kits. Ones that have only low, high and fine are not exactly precision scientific measurement tools. I bet you also use a colorimetric pH kit rather than a meter. ;)

pH 8.6 is not a major overshoot so I would do just as you plan and do a couple, say 5 gallon, water changes this week. That should insure stable water quality.

Then take a look at Randy's Articles for answers on solving various pH, alkalinity and calcium problems.

Squirted: gently dropped in the appropriate number of drops from the marine buff chemical bottle that was expressly made for newbie reefers to buffer pH and alk problems... or so the box said...

5 gallons is a third of my tank, am I really to do 33% water changes twice this week? I heard water changes that big and close together aren't so good...

But since I don't want two fingers in my eyes, I guess I will. Nyuk nyuk nyuk! :D

If you match temp and salinity the 33% water changes pose no problem. I read that somewhere on a box I think. :D

Let me guess a Red sea test kit for alk. Pretty much useless (sorry) Try salifert much better. I would also caution about adding anything untill you get a real test kit. Ph is a bit on the high side but not to bad. Also measure what is going in (salt mix) for alk and ca. Before it goes in.
