high pitch noise coming from halide

im running 2x 250w ice cap ballasts with 20k xm bulbs and there is a very irritating high pitched noise coming from one of the bulbs, i have traced down the noise to the mogul socket. anyone else had this problem?? i can tap the socket and it will stop. do i need to replace it???

Take it apart and check to see if any of the wires are loose or corroded. It might just be time to redo the connections. There is nothing inside a mogul that can make that noise other then then a loose wire.

i had the same problem. i replaced my old icecap ballasts with new ones and the problems stopped.

im sure youve noticed that xm bulbs and the old icecaps dont get along--issues with start up, etc

these systems are less than a year old. a friend of mine opened a LFS about a year ago and didnt make it. he had 4 of these systems on a 240 gallon reef and i got 2 from him. i bought used but i knew exactly what i was getting, hell, i even helped him wire and install them.

im actually shopping for new bulbs right now. debating on trying out the reef optix 20k', the other LFS around town swears on them and runs them on his personal tank.
