Hitchhiker anemone ID help

Hey everyone!

Please see the attached photo to help me ID this small (about the size of my thumbnail) anemone. There are 2 of them that came on a large rock of Zoas I recently purchased.

Are they some variant of Aptasia or Mojano? Their emerald green bodies with bright red tips are very different than the typical specimen of pest anemone I have seen and I'm reluctant to get rid of them if they do not pose any danger to my tank.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It might be some type of variant, but I wouldn't treat it any differently than an ugly Majano.

I've never seen an anemone like it, and I seriously don't think it's an aiptasia or a majano. I'd pull the rock out and work to try and 'dig' the anemones out of the rock and keep them separated from the rest of the reef. If you get them off, offer them a new rock with some good holes to attach to and hide in.

I think they look pretty cool and if they don't propagate or spread like aiptasia or majano, then you have a couple of cool and uncommon anemones. If new ones start to grow there you dug the originals out from the zoa colony, then I'd use an aiptasia remedy to kill the start ups.

I'd love to have those in my quarantine tank to watch and see what they do. If they don't propagate, I'd be happy to have them in my reef.

I agree. I don't believe it to be either as well, but it definitely seems like a pest anemone. Like Ron said, I would make a small Q tank or species only system and let this guy go nuts. It looks very different from any pest anemones I have seen.

Recently I received rock with dozens of lime green and purple anemones which I have placed in a 10 gallon. They would certainly be pests in a normal reef aquarium setting, but look absolutely amazing on their own under 20K lighting.

It's a pest anemone, used to be called 'tulip anemones' . They spread quite proficiently and sting anything nearby. I was given a couple of those cute little nems 12 years ago and they took over my Pico tank.

Looks like a tulip anemone to me too. I think they are usually under the majono rubric.

It's beautiful! I wouldn't mind having a 20 long filled with them and the correct lighting to show them off. I like it :thumbsup:
