Check this out! I've had this T. squamosa, since September '05 so in 8 months I had never noticed anything like this until tonight. The clam is approximately 8" in size I would estimate. The shrimp, maybe 1".

If it's in a squamosa then it's either Conchodytes tridacnae or Anchistus miersi. Both are commensals and nothing to worry about.

Thanks, I was pretty sure it's commensal as the length of time I've had the clam would not suggest it's stressed. But the possible species ID's are cool, thanks for the info. :)

lol, i have a few with little aip.'s on 'em too :)

they are very good to have so dont try to take him out, suposively they will help clean the inside of the clam, pick parasites and other things, I'm jealous :)

Actually, exactly what they do for a living isn't clear. Fankboner (1972) studied Anchistus meirsi and suggested that they were stealing particulate food and mucus from the gills of the clams they were in - but not enough to adversely affect them.

I have a shrimp inside my 10" teardrop max. Every once in a while it molts and the clam spits the molt out. Pretty cool.
