Check this out! I've had this T. squamosa, since September '05 so in 8 months I had never noticed anything like this until tonight. The clam is approximately 8" in size I would estimate. The shrimp, maybe 1".
Thanks, I was pretty sure it's commensal as the length of time I've had the clam would not suggest it's stressed. But the possible species ID's are cool, thanks for the info.
they are very good to have so dont try to take him out, suposively they will help clean the inside of the clam, pick parasites and other things, I'm jealous
Actually, exactly what they do for a living isn't clear. Fankboner (1972) studied Anchistus meirsi and suggested that they were stealing particulate food and mucus from the gills of the clams they were in - but not enough to adversely affect them.
