HLLE - yellow tang - carbon removed

Hi all,

I have a yellow tang recovering from HLLE. He developed HLLE while eating romaine and occasional NLS pellets.

Removed the carbon and the HLLE has gone away almost completely. That is the only change. I'm convinced about the possible connection of HLLE and carbon.

Just a sample size of 1 - but that's what happened.

still feading on romaine?

Yeah.. I would think the Romaine was causing it, it has very little nutritional value compared to dried seaweed. And many people believe HLLE is caused by poor nutrition.

Another thing that might have changed that you didn't observe is he might be getting more nutrition from some other source, algae growing in the aquarium, pods... If you see him picking at the rocks all day you can bet he is eating little bits off of the rocks.

i've ran carbon in my aquariums for 30 years and none of my fish ever developed HLLE while I owned them. (I have bought some that had it and cured them). I believe some internal parasites can also cause it, but that comes back to the parasites consuming the food... Ingesting carbon is safe in humans(it's frequently used in poisoning incidents).. I don't know why it wouldn't be safe for other creatures.
