I bought 7 Chromis this last Wed.. When I went to bed last night I had all 7 and they were healthy. When I woke up this morning I looked and found only 5 to be swimming. Then I found one of them in my Grape alage with his throat gone and the other is still MIA. The powerheads turn off at night so it wasn't that. The rock is from the Caribbean so I may have a Mantis shrimp I also got three unknown crabs that come in the rock they look to be in the Sally foot family. So if you have missed with the mantis shrimps before any ideas o how to get crabs and or mantis shrimps out like traps or something.

chromis have the wonderful reputation of killing eachother....its a social thing. They generally all beat up on one, till its dead. Then they choose the next in line.

Having said that, once you hit 6 or above, they generally dont do this. Nor do they do it as much when there are odd numbers of them.

I would suspect that may be the case.

On a separate note, what do you have to provide circulation during the night?

Paul.

They also relax when there is more room to swim. A Chromis is a fast swimmer and (when no predators are around) often stay out in the water. With a larger tank with larger numbers, they often have more than just a few fish to pick on and the ones being picked on have LOTS of room to get away.

blackhemi35003,

Use your allotment of fish room in your tank for something (anything) other than chromis. I started off with 9, ended up with 2. Then purchased 3 from someone getting out of the hobby. That brought me to 5, which soon turned into 3. As soon as these guys kill each other off, I'll use the "fish space" to purchase something (anything) more interesting.

From the Chromis bigot,
Ray

Sally foot's do kill chromis as well. We took 2 10 gallon tanks with 1 chromis in and 1 sally light foot in each. Next day both chromis were dead and half eaten.
