You could try filter socks and carbon, etc to try to get it out of suspension as quickly as possible, but damage control is the best you can do right now...
I would say yes. Any kind of filration will help with particulates. The more filtration the more polished your water is. On my 75 I ran 2 emperor (sp?) 400 and my water clearness was excellent, without a sump. I didn't have the problem that you are having though.
I have a dragon goby that gets sand everywhere when he sifts. I sometimes get it floating in the water column but it's not constant like a sand storm like you are saying.
