HOB filter that stays quiet...does it exist?

On my 10 gal plant tank in my bedroom hangs an aquaclear HOB filter. works well, but I keep having to buy new ones because nothing I do seems to keep them quiet for more than 6-8 months. Its a rubbing/humming coming from the impeller. I am easily distracted with noises like that when I sleep (I am told its a byproduct of being adhd as a child). The sound of water flowing and dripping out the top is fine...its the damn impeller that is killing me!!!!

Anyone have any suggestions on another model?

your probably gonna have to go with canister.im having the same issue with my sons tank.i just cleaned the impeller and housing on his emperor and that thing its still noisy.

My HOB is the same way,its an aquaclear to, why didn't I ever hook up that canister filter to it... anyway I have an rena XP3 canister filter if you want to go that route we can work something out

Check out the Eheim Liberty line of powerfilters. I think Marine Depot carries them.
I had one on my seahorse tank and it was silent.
Only drawback is the filter cartridges - they get kinda pricey.

Come to think of it - I may still have one in the garage. I'll take a look when I get home.

I have a canister filter I will sell you cheap. It is a cascades 700. I ran it as a back up and it is very quiet as far as I can tell.

they are an external thing that sits on the ground, kind of like an enclosed sump thats filled with water and has layers of filtration, you won't get that running water noise, which personally helps me sleep, and mine at least didn't make any noise at all, well except for startup when its working the bubbles out.

What about a skilter? The one our 10g isnt loud at all.

that's because you got it from skinnyjoe:smokin:

I've used a Magnum bio wheels on QT tanks for years with no noise problems. I have one on a 50 QT in a room that I run to when my lovely bride snores, and it's still quiet.
